so, here's the definition.....
Kami (神)
literally mean "spirits, natural forces, essence" in the Shinto faith. Although the word is sometimes translated as "god" or "deity," some Shinto scholars argue that such a translation can cause a misunderstanding of the term. - from wikianswers...

Yup, originally everything spiritual and supernatural that wasn't a demon, was a kami. And there were kamis every where (Mount Fuji, every temple, several guardian spirits for important things, like farming). But when Japan came to touch with western influences and term 'god', word 'kami' was the closest thing, so it was adapted to that use also. But yeah, at origin it isn't actually the same thing as 'god'.

As a fun and almost toally random fact; among the most important and worshipped kamis there are three siblings. Amaterasu, Susanoo, Tsukuyomi. Sharingan technigues, anyone?
