Hi, I understand that without YSmenu, some games do not work. But ever since i downloaded the R4 v1.18 + YSmenu from John's thread and replaced my _DS_menu placed TTmenu folder and YSmenu.nds in it, I was able to play both games that worked only with YSmenu and the ones that only work without it (ei, Assassin's Creed 2). Its not really a problem, but I'm just wondering why this is the case. Clarification of situation: Now, by just running games normally (turning on ds, go to games, select one and play), I can play both the games that work only with YSmenu and the ones that only work without YSmenu.
Because the Ysmenu.nds uses the TTmenu folder files, And Emulates a DSTT card on a R4 revolution for DS (NDSL/NDS) card!!!

but for some reason for me, I don't have to run YSmenu.nds first to play games that don't work with v1.18.

After DLing your thingy, i just replaced my _DS_Menu and perhaps something else...so I guess yes, replacing files might have done that. But this is no problem...yet, I'm just asking how and why this unexpected, convenient thing is happening.
The ysmenu.nds was also converted to _DS_Menu.dat in this package Emulators for R4 - NDS Collection http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?v050wm0lkmx I down't know but mabe that was the problem
