OK a little help from the pros would be nice.

Ive got a Compaq Presario Laptop with Windows XP SP2 installed, Windows comes with an option to create 'Recovery' CD/DVDs from the recovery partition on the laptops HD.

What I want to know is can I create the recovery disks and use then and Windows XP install disks on another computer? (Namely a Compaq Presario Desktop).

I currently have vista installed on the desktop, and wish to boot XP instead. Ive read up on dual booting but to be honest cant be fucked screwing around with partitions. Luckly my PC has the option to boot from an external HD built into the BIOS. As ive learnt I should be able to install XP onto the external HD instead of the internal HD and then use the external HD to boot XP.

If there is a way to completely install XP over vista then I would prefer that, vista really is starting to give me a headache.

    Any help would be great.

generally no, since the install is specific to the machine it came on.
