I am running at the moment windows vista home basic SP1 which has given me more than one headache so i am backing up my stuff on DVD's and DL DVD's when i went thinking of the OS i should go for next, XP or 7, i have heard good things of both OS and i am making a collection of the 7 manuals that a newspaper is publishing ATM so i am seeking opinions onto which Os should i go for.
Linux. I'd go with XP. Vista Basic is ment for low end systems so the computer most likely won't meet the minimums for 7.
Windows 7 actually has lower requirements than vista. Nevertheless, 7 is quite a step up from XP in terms of requirements, and a lot of the cheap laptops/computers sold as 'vista ready' with vista preinstalled were not actually capable of running vista properly. Essentially what happens is when a new version of Windows comes out, manufacturers slap it on all their current line up of machines because its the latest and greatest thing to be released and they dont actually pay any attention to whether or not the machine is adequate to run it. Vista was such a huge increase in resource consumption over XP that the majority of laptops/affordable desktops on the market at the time simply had no chance of running it to an acceptable standard. This, in part, contributed to the hugely negative perception of vista and the very poor take up of it.
Back to basic rules of updating. Don't update unless you have to. Why exactly are you updating anyway?
Agreed, this is actually one of my major issues with upgrading to Windows 7 as I play SIMCity 4. I've heard that some people find that SC4 runs better on Win 7 & others have problems getting the game to run at a stable state so until this gets resolved I might still stick with XP even when I upgrade my PC. Although it sucks now that the computer store I go to no longer sells XP Installers as they've now stuck with Win7 so this might be a problem when the time comes
A) I got sick and tired of vista and it's issues with SP2. B) My pc can run win 7 perfectly it was made last year (i tested 7 once but i had some issues so i had to downgrade to vista in order to save my files). C) My hard drive has a 33 GB partition i do not want at all so i am backing up to erase the main partition and then add a new OS. D) I am using my laptop for many things, wirting docs, running oemulators like no$gba and SNES9x3D and VBA as i enjoy playing some retro games.
33 GB Partition? That's really random... That's probably the backup partition. I have never used it and unless you like downloading viruses a lot, you are most likely just wasting space. Your computer came with SP2...THAT SUCKS. Since you're doing a complete overhaul, you might as well just upgrade your HDD to a bigger size. Now's the perfect time to do it anyway.
And in order to do that i need to erase the other partition that has 117 GB which is the one that has vista, the 33GB had originally linux canaima and venezuelan made linux OS but the main issue was that it was buggy as hell and it had issues of compatibility with FFox and i tried to use when a sytem32 file got corrupted since my vista CD lacks of a repair option and i am having activation issues too, it refuses to accept the key it was provided with the PC saying that an other (now non existent) PC is using it. Plus if i am going to upgrade my HDD of my laptop then i would try to upgrade the video card (i dunno if realtek soundcards are good, but that is what my laptop has) give more ram, GHZ and i dunno maybe give it a better cooling system. In other words i would make a full overhaul on hardware and software.
No, you would not have to erase the other partition. Programs such as paragon partition manager can resize partitions, so all you do is delete the smaller one and resize the larger partition to fill the disk. No data is lost in the process (aside from the data on the deleted partition of course). If you were using windows disk management, then yes you would have to delete both and make a new partition, but there are many better third party programs available that can resize partitions. Internal hard disks are virtually always cheaper than external. (an external is basically an internal hard disk in an enclosure with an interface converter board). Less than 1% of laptops have upgradable video cards, it is unlikely that yours will be one, however if you give me the make and model I have a means of finding out if it does or not. Laptop sound cards are not upgradable at all (barring using a USB external sound card), processors are rarely upgradable and the cooling system is never upgradable, which makes upgrading the processor an unwise decision even if it is possible. RAM and hard disk are about the only upgradable parts in a laptop.
Can you provide me with a link please? if it's possible to avoid having to deletle the main partition i would be happy as all i would need to do is upgrade to 7. Eh well the model is a Portable VIT Laptop M2400 i dunno if they are made outside of venezuela. And is that so? well i know what i am gonna ask for xmas a desktop laptop instead of a PSP. And i would need to check the prices of upgrading the IHDD, but for now a 1 TB will suffice since i will make a backup copy on it too and the other 500 GB would be destined to wii games.
I'm afraid I can't give a link because its commercial software. Your laptop is not on the list of laptops that have upgradable graphics modules, while this does not necessarily mean it definitely doesn't have one, it does mean that it is not known to have one and therefore probably does not. Unless you are confident enough to open the laptop and look, assume it does not. In the UK/Europe at least, 1TB hard disks are currently the best price per GB available, and the samsung spinpoint F3s are very affordable.
Well According to Mercadolibre a 1TB sata IHDD is cheap over 600 bucks, cheap i am being aoffered a protable EHDD on 1.200 with 500 more bucks i could buy a PS2. ALso it probably is not there since it's only sold on Venezuelan Territory so i have doubts it will show up on any international list. Ok it seems its an integrated video card, for reference it's an intel chip series, i read on the official forums that some people that have the same model as mine are running on it win7 now i need to figure out why it stoped connecting to the internet.
