I looked around and didn't see anyone else with this problem, so I apologize if this has already been answered.

I'm having a bit of difficulty with starting up Xenogears on epsxe.

I'm running the Xenogears mdf/msd files provided on romulation, mounting the drives on the most recent Daemon Tools. I've always been able to figure something out for making things like Valkyrie Profile run, but when I load from cd, all I get is a blank screen.

    My Specs:

    Windows XP
    AMD Sempron umm... 1.8GHz?
    767MB Ram

    Epsxe 1.60
    scph1001 bios
    Pete's Open GL2 Driver 2.8
    Eternal SPU Plugin 1.41
    Xeven's CDR Driver 0.93

I used this configuration to play Valkyrie Profile, so I'm not sure as to what specs I should be using for Xenogears, but it just won't run? Any advice?

Unfortunately working configurations vary between games. Do you run other games from the same virtual drive?

Yeah, I've gotten various other things to work, although not running through epsxe. I was thinking that maybe if epsxe was trying to read my actual disc drive and not auto detecting the virtual drive (I don't have a disc in the real one...) but I'm not sure how to check to see if that is working.

Okay, I just checked to see if it would work with Valkyrie Profile. It does not, I get the black screen as well. So, I suppose that means that epsxe is not defaulting to the virtual drive...?

I fixed that, so... Well, it loads now. Sort of. The first couple times I ran it, it wouldn't go past the screen that said it was by Square Entertainment. I could get to the title screen a few times, but it keeps blacking out.

What are the recommended drivers to run this game then?

A random question then to finish off. When I exit out of epsxe, it continues to suck up my cpu, so I have to go into Windows Task manager to shut down epsxe as a process. Anyone know how to fix this? If you don't, don't worry about it, it's just a convenience issue.

    Thanks again.

I think I know what is wrong with the CDs. You must configure the CD plugin to point to the drive letter of your virtual drive. Then you can choose 'run CD' and all will be well.

I know it wasn't all that clear, but I did post in my previous reply that I did think of that. I fixed that already. My problem still exists though. Every time I load, the publisher screen shows up (the one that says it's by Square Entertainment) however, it cuts out at random intervals. I simply get a black screen before or after the title screen shows up. The furthest I've ever gotten it getting to click new game. Most of the time, I don't get that far before the game stops working.

hmm, what happens if you try a directx driver instead of OGL?

To make sure that epsxe shuts down all the way you have to make sure that you hit escape while in game and then exit it, I know I used to just use alt-F4 to exit and then I would have to quit it through task manager also.

    Cool thanks.

As for getting Xenogears to work, sorry, what would you recommend as far as a DirectX driver is concerned?

pete's directx 7 is a good place to start.

Okay, I couldn't find a download for Pete's, so I used Segu D3d... Not sure how much of a difference that makes, but it made my computer refresh really quickly, so that's not it.

I found Pete's DirectX 6 driver, and I seem to be having the same problem as before. I simply get a black screen after selecting new game. I can use the load button to access the memory cards, but I cannot do anything outside of that.
Also, when I exit epsxe, I get the error message "The instruction at '0x039b30da" referenced memory at 0x00000008". The memory could not be read. Click OK"... etc.

Any ideas? Also, if you think it will help, could you provide a link to Pete's DirectX 7 driver? I cannot find it and the romulation link to plugins is not working...

Thanks again for your help so far
