What are the best ways to modify your xbox 360 to keep it cooler? Any ideas???

You can take the metal case out, then do some holes on it. If you want, do some big ones and stick a fan in there. I believe that's what equitypetey did. Also, you can just take the case and play like that, I've done it with my PS2 and it goes just fine.

or u can get those things that you buy from stores to help you cool them down, but search on the interent to find a good one, cause some are useless but some can be good i'm not sure, cause mine so far i left it on for a day and it didnt over heat or feel hot just felt warm

I just use a fan that plugs into a USB and holds over your power plug. But yes, if you play your 360 for a while, open it up after using the toolkit (secret poke holes on plastic etc.), you will find it burns your skin.

Yeah i've looked into those nyko intercoolers that plug into the back of the xbox power port (then the power lead pulgs into the intercooler). Many people have found that they melt, and make your xbox play up. So i've been turned off those. Does anyone know how to take the xbox 360 apart properly? I think i'm going to have to mod it with more air holes i think.

You need to get a toolkit, basically a metal sheet with bits poking out so you can properly hit the holes in the top and bottom plastic covers (the grey ones). Are you wanting to take it fully apart?

They don't melt. Mine hasn't anyway.

Yeah I thought you would need a tool kit. Don't have one... Yeah I was going to take the cover off and add more air holes to it so it can breathe better. True, yours didn't melt? mmm maybe it melted on people that didn't have it plugged in properly or something stupid like that, it wouldn't suprise me :D. Are you using the nyko intercooler? Is there any difference in the performance of the xbox??

I dont know what it is with people and their hot 360s? I had an out of the box 360, no fan, no drilled holes, and I used to play for 18-20 hours at a time (cod4 :p) and then leave it on overnight and pick it up in the morning. I probably had my 360 turned on for 4-5days strait at one point without a break and yeah it got warm but never to the point of overheating, nor did I ever have any troubles with it.

Yeah well you're lucky I suppose my 360 heats up, and starts to play up. Like it'll say the disc can't be read cause it's dirty or damaged, when all my game discs are clean as a whistle. No dust no scratches. And it starts to freeze up as well. Doesn't do this all the time just every now and then. Just thought keeping it cooler would help its performance.

It also depends on where you put your 360. They really do overheat, the other day I was on a store checking for some PC games, and I saw a 360 for people to play. It had the three RRODs and the case in which it was was hell hot.

Yup, xbox 360s do not like being in enclosed spaces. Best place for it is on the floor in front of your TV about a foot away from everything else.

It's not recommended to keep your Xbox on the carpet. Usually a wood platform is best.

its actually not good to put any device with a cooling fan in it on the floor in fact that will make your 360 act up and burn out causing general hardware failure (rrod) being on or near the floor with the fan running is just like being a dust magnet and when too much dust builds up on your fans your hardware overheats and burns out and in cases of dust build up microsoft considers your factory warranty invalid. also on the note of cooling fans the last i heard the power required by the nyko fans also causes hardware failure by taking too much power from other running parts and prompted microsoft to make a press statement saying any 360 that has used non oem cooling fans will no longer be considered to have a factory warranty. according to MR Gates the overheating shouldnt be a problem and if it is send it to microsoft and they will fix it

here it the post if you want to see what i did to mine

best thing you can do without opening it up though it will still void your warranty is just simple cut the mesh (plastic and metal) at the back and remoce it.

this will allow 25% more air flow out thus keeping just that little bit cooler.

the thing everybody forgets is if you are on live a hot 360 will effect your frame rates (you lag) so keeping you 360 cool as long as the servers and your connection are fine you will lag less then your buddies.

Since dust build up is a natural occurrence in houses and opening it up to clean the fans out would rightly void the warranty, I think they'd have difficulty making that stick in court.

if it causes a fan malfunction it is actually very easy to prove my first gateway that sat on my carpet for a year running had the cpu go out sent it back to gateway got it back two weeks later with an explanation as to why they didnt fix it. your right normal dust is ok but if allowed to build up on your fan it will cause your 360 to overheat really bad and that is the point where you should send it to microsoft or take it to best buy because if you allow the buildup to get too bad and the lack of a functioning fan causes your cpu to burn up microsoft will not do anything for you(and trust me two inches of caked on dust will be more than enough proof).

i love idiots with dusty issues, i bought a rrod 360 and it didn't even need fixing. i opened it up and cleaned the layer of dust from the heat sink and it worked fine. sold it off again. all i had to do was open it and clean it and i made a mint.

Yea i've got my 360 on laying horizontal on a book so it gets more air flow from the bottom as well. And it's sitting out in the open directly under a ceiling fan. It does alright there but the weather where I live is usually hot and humid so I need everything I can to increase the air flow. And the dust is another reason why I want to open up the 360, I wanna clean that s**t out. Where can I get one of these xbox 360 tools to open the case? Oh and how did you set those fans up in there??

you don't need to pay for a tool kit, there are loads of tutorials on how to open a 360 case on the net so just google that. but you will need torx drivers and you can pick them up from hardware stores you just need to know the size.

and what fans do you speak of, the ones in the back are tailsmoon fans and for them you just unplug the old ones and put in the new ones.
for the pc case fan i cat a hole to the correct size and screwed it down and fed the wires around to the back to be connected to a different power supply.

i have actually added a switch since but the pc fan isn't that needed i just did it cause i could, although if its on my 360 has never got hot.

the best thing you could do is cut the mesh out of the back put in tailsmoon fans (ebay is the best place to pick them up)
and do the air flow mod which is basically cutting up a cereal box partitioning the flow(the white chimney inside) so the each fan sucks air from each heatsink then covering up the tops and sides of the heatsinks so the air can only be sucked through and not over or around and sealing all the gaps with electrical tape.
