So, my girlfriends new netbook arrived today and i've been busy setting it up and installing all the good stuff i like and removing all the bad stuff that comes with it. I had no problems till i tried installing messenger. I tried using the "wlinstaller.exe" for windows live messenger which i used to install my messenger on my pc but it threw up a message saying i cannot install windows live messenger without "windows update agent". I can install messenger using the download on hotmail but it took two attempts to install it and i don't like the new version and am confident that the missus wont either.

SO, whats the deal with this "windows update agent"?

Is this recent addition similar to when Microsoft started requiring product authorization before being able to download the service packs? (or atleast SP2)

no idea, but I wouldn't put it past them (I can't run newer versions of live messenger because M$ blocked them from installing on windows 2003)
