Could somebody please tell me which is right? On the one hand I keep things saying that it's impossible to upgrade from XP to 7. But yet on the other hand actual people have been telling me that it IS possble. Which one is it?! Just thought I'd add the fact that I do have the upgrading software discs.

    You cannot upgrade.
You can only do a 'clean' install.

So, basically, back up all your important data, record the names of software you want to get, and install Windows 7.
It'll erase everything. Then just transfer your files back and install the programs you need.

OK, now you've stuck two questions in my head.

    1) If I can't upgrade then why the hairy heck did Microsoft make upgrade discs?

    2) So now that means I'm gong to have to spend a ridiculously large ammount of money to get Windows 7 the regluar way?

    1. You can upgrade for Vista, not XP.

    2. Pretty much. Price has dropped though, so it's not that expensive compared to what it was when it first came out.

note that you can't necessarily upgrade from vista. You can only upgrade to the same version, i.e 32bit vista to 32bit 7, or 64bit vista to 64bit 7.

As Xeni stated, you cannot upgrade to 7 from XP.
