Why doesn't some company just hop in and design a console for retro gaming...

    ... And retro gaming only?

    They have/do.
But they are usually poor quality Chinese knock offs.

Many legit companies don't because of the copyright laws and licensing requirements that would come with it.

Wat. I'm talking about a new console for new developers to create new games designed like they were made for the 80s/90s.

Kind of similiar to what the people of behemoth are doing. Titles like Castle Crashers or Alien Hominid.

Nuff said. There is also the Famiclone. Some are good, yet as previously stated, when they stink, they're putrid personified.

The problem with that is the retro gaming appeal isn't the quality of the graphics/sound/gameplay, etc.

The reason the majority of people who go for the Retro stuff is because it's the same stuff they played when they were younger. New "Retro" doesn't hold the same appeal to the masses as the real Retro stuff does.

Even so, could it break the cycle of constant first person shooters?

As long as there is a demand for FPS then the supply will be there. Best bet is to actually try and acquire the actual hardware from those days past. good luck finding a SNES that isn't a nasty shade of nicotine brown.

Probably not, the insurgence of FPS games will die eventually. Just like the insurgence of platformers on the NES, RPGs on the SNES, puzzle games after Tetris etc.

There's actually a way to get rid of those colors. Though, they're not household products.

I'm not so sure about that, just look at Cave Story. It looks, feels and sounds about as retro as it gets.

    Spectacular game.
Graphics, gameplay and sound are all great. I would pay for games like this.

A lot of flash developers seem to be porting/remaking/or creating retro games.

Text games like "Don't Shit Your Pants", or Super Mario cross over. The community of newgrounds is basically centered around this stuff.

Also. I'm secretly here to advertise newgrounds.

There is more than just Dingo. You also have Gamepark, GP32X, GP32X Wiz, Open Pandora, and probably others.

I'm disapointed that nobody has mentioned the recent retro-style Megaman games. For shame.

They were alright, I liked them, not so much 10 but I liked 9. Quite a throwback to Megaman 2.

MM10 seemed lazy, right down to the music, it seemed like what happened to the last couple MM games on the NES.

MM9 was good, especially the music, it was fun, challenging and had better bosses than 10.

Even then these games are decent, the people who rank them really great are the people with nostalgia glasses wishing they had a sequel to MM or a straight up sequel to MM2.

I like games that play as homage to the originals, but not ones that do it to almost every detail where they still keep the name and even recycle stuff... mix things up a bit, change the stories, create new characters, make it enough to be unique etc. And most important, don't keep the same flaws which the originals had.

I was never a massive fan of megaman anyway, but i don't want to play a game that feels exactly the same.

Honestly, it isn't 1985. And let's face it, progression isn't exactly moving forward, so much as extending what we already know. There are a lot of flash games on the net that reflect simplicity. There are emulators for stuff that maybe discontinued and too difficult and time consuming to track down and costly to purchase. Enjoy the new stuff for being new, the old for simplicity, and remember the Barenaked Ladies song, "It's all been done."
    It really has.

from personal opinion... I hate retro games.

(PS: expressing my opinion here, no need to flame or anything, I know some people love retro games)

Besides... games always accompany the technology.

If you pick games like for example... the first Sonic... first Mario or the Megaman from 1 to 3 or even Final Fatansy 1 (first version)
There is absolutely nothing retro on them. They were made using the best that the console and the technology could offer these days. And thats far from the idea of "retro".

These INDIE games (games made by small companies or homebrews) that are made on Flash for ex, most of the time are made retro style or even 8-bit graphics simple because its simple and less costly to do.

Megaman 9 and 10 are somewhat, real retro-style games, but since they were released only in the online store, it proves that there isn't enough market or they just made it that way to save funds.

IMO, retro style is just another classification for the idea of "game art". Even if i would call it myself only lazyness and cutting costs.

Retro is cheaper meaning they could really update everything. And since it is cheaper more people would buy it. I would LIKE a real console not emulator that could play crazy taxi even though i a only 10 year old and havent played before cause looks so awesome AND final Fantasy 7 and all that good stuff. If a games is only ten dollars less people would pirate because they COULD PLAY ALL OF THE GAMES. SPELL FAIL
