Why does the R4...suck?

I hear tell back in the day R4 was quite the flashcart. Yet today between Supercard and Acekard (how many are there anyway?), R4 is at the bottom. Why is that so? Is it because the tech isn't being upgraded? Surely the R4 people are fixing it right? How come the R4 hasn't aged well?

 

Basically because of it's lack of support for games.


To understand WHY it sucks, you must understand it's history.

The R4 was one of the best flashcarts around originally.

After a while, the R4 firmware was cracked and people started making clones.
This resulted in a loss of quality and support.

And as some people know there are at least over 20-30+ types of R4.

All with basically the same firmware, just modified for that specific R4 type.

It's more about money rather than what you get for buying their product.

 

Because there are many clones and the people who originally made the firmware decided to stop doing it after they were sued or something like that.
But then I don't really care about the past,YSMenu does more then enough for me.

 

If that's the case, then how come Acekard or Supercard isn't falling under the same fate?

 

Because most people's first flashcarts are R4.
It's a bigger and more well-known name.

Mine was. I'm never going back.

 

AceKard and Supercards are still great, despite the risk of clones. AKAIO 1.4.1 has clone support, and the Super Card old original firmware has clone support.

 

It really bugs me mostly due to how R4 is strictly limited nowadays (A recent collection of a blue hedgehog on the DS is mostly the cause of my woes).

Doesn't help in my area where I live (Philippines), all I've been seeing are R4s and NO Acekard and Supercard.

With Heart Gold/Soul Silver coming up as well, my hopes on ever playing one of those are bleak.

 

Which is kinda funny cause in Asia piracy is really common :
And I believe all you see are the clones,real R4s are rare now since they're no longer being manufactured.

Well I'm stuck with a crappy flashcart. Anyway I can salvage of it and at least TRY to make newer games playable (AAI is working, for one, with no freezing issues)?

 

AAI has no anti-piracy anyway.

 

I don't like that you need to install YSmenu to play certain games like Tropix and Bowsers Inside Story.
You can play them but only with YSmenu.

Secondly the R4 team updates only the R4i and not the normal R4. And because of that the new features are getting lost or needed to be installed with a homebrew.

Also, form what I know, moonshell is NOT installed at first. Other cards have!

Also final argument and the most important one for me is this: Only 1 and 2 GB cards will work.
4GB or more will not work.

Change the ysmenu.ini

From LITERALS=LITERALS_JAP

To

[YSMENU]

LITERALS=LITERALS_ENG

And save, ysmenu.ini can be found in ttmenu folder , if using ysmenu

 

Now see I had no idea about a Ysmenu. In fact taking a look at my own R4, I have indeed found a Ysmenu on the startup screen. When I select it, something loads....and nothing happens.

If ysmenu is indeed better then 1.18, which I have right now, how come it's not being pushed?
