I'd like to start by saying i really like this site. I'm not against it in any way. Although, I am curious to know how the gaming corp Sony/Nintendo/Sega ect... allow romulation.net to provide ROM downloads. I know its sort of a legal "gray area" but i was pretty certain that distributing copyrighted material is technically illegal. Any thoughts?

technically they can't do anything about the existance of the site, they can just request that we remove data they hold the copyright to, and if we refuse to comply then they can force us to.

so they just figure it will happen regardless so they don't even try to stop it, sounds reasonable. they save a lot of money in lawyer fees this way and we get more games for free.

Theres no point, its a waste of time. We use the forum, and go to the torrents or other sites for games.

That and their are certain games which are unplayable unless you buy the Original, I think Guitar Hero is a obvious example. Then their are certain facts that some people still buy Original Games, And otherwise some Downloads in this site are pretty much Shareware (Arcade Roms?)

i think that they are putting more effort into trying to make their system unhackable, the ps3 which uses blurays as an example, its not impossible but the cost would be so great its impractical.

For an example, the Winter olmpics game with sonic in it or something like that. It was asked tobe removed and Romulation did remove it. Or at least disallowed anyone to get it. It is protected or something. Oh well, let's search it else ware. The Olympics ended! Now the hype is Pokemon and SOnic racing! Still doesn't work on No$GBA...

there will always be rom-sites no matter how hard they try. and unless romulation is based out of the u.s. legally they can't do crap. there aren't cease and desists everywhere. you can't just call and say "stop it"like you can here. romulation could just tell sony or whoever to pound sand.

I think it's mostly because they have no clue it exists, after all the internet is HUGE! A person would have to go to each individual ROM site and issue a cease and desist order(to fully shut down the site, not just take an individual ROM off) and that would require them going to hundreds if not millions of sites. So as garychencool put it, they're focusing on Anti-Piracy checks. They understand those aren't 100%, but a patch won't come out until a little while after the hype for the game has ended for the most part. And even if they did try to shut down all the ROM sites, that's not going to keep people from going out and making new ones. Long story short, it's not worth the effort to shut down ROM sites.

incorrect, they are well aware it exists. You dont get to the size romulation is without people knowing about it.

There is no Internet police lol
Thing is, with hacking, people will always find knew ways of making communities and unlocking roms.
Instead, they increase the security of their products to ensure they're unplayable so people buy them.

There's no UNIVERSAL Internet police. But almost every country has some people in charge of internet crimes and stuff. Otherwise how could people be sued and forced to pay a lifetime indenization because of illegal downloads?

Sony, Nintendo, Sega, etc. Can't do anything since there are so many sites, plus all the torrents.
And anyways, whenever a new one goes bye-bye, another will come up.

Most people think that, but it's no where near true. If you buy the game, you really just buying the rights to use the data on that disk/cartdrige/etc. So unless you rip it yourself, it's still illegal. Very...very illegal...

That would fall into the "fair use" law(that most companies don't seem to follow). Downloaded ROMs weren't made for personal use, since they're public downloads.

Lets say the internet is way too big for even huge corporations to try stoping some stuff.
