rotten blu-ray discs?? never even knew such a thing existed! if blu-ray would have been a standard, many companies would have to replace a lot [probably millions] if the disc end up bad. the problem is that the engineers knew about it and tried to say that it was a manufacturing fault. if you knew it was a manufacturing fault, why did you still sell and use them?

Well it seems it's confined to only a small number of cases. So I'd say this isn't nearly as good as reason as just saying that it's made by Sony. :)

which isnt a good reason at all because sony make good media. It's way better than HD-DVD because the capacity is considerably higher

Yet HD-DVD are exactly the same quality (if not better) than blu-ray because Sony won't allow the usage of Microsofts video compression. So really, there's more space but it's not used properly.

Besides, looking back I doubt they're going to succeed anyway, beta-max was better flop, and there are more examples.

Beta cam is still in use; practically every major film studio in the world uses it. And its betamax compatable

The point is that it was out-marketed by VHS, an inferior competitor. Sony has always failed when it comes to selling their products, and what good is a blu-ray player if only 1/10th of movies are released as blu-ray?

Does anyone know how the production costs of a blu-ray disc is compared to a HD-DVD?

sony werent the only one stumped by VHS, panasonic lost out with their offering too (although not many people know about that) VHS caught on purely because it was the first one released.

I thought it was because Betamax had a nasty habit of eating tapes?

And the reason I think Blu-ray is going to run into problems is because the discs are so delicate.
Its no problem for me, most of my cd/dvd still look factory fresh, but I've seen a lot of Cds that have a couple hundred knicks in them. Cds can handle that, and if all esle fails you can always get the knicks buffed out.

That isn't an option for blu-ray. Knick up a blu-ray disc a little bit, and you'll have to buy another one.

blueray right now sounds a lot better to companies due to huge attempts on sony's part to make blueray stuff hard to counterfeit. plus sony has huge deals fox and fox companies, disney and etc while hd only has wb n aol and we all know how well anything that works with aol works out *insert wb incident*

why have a go at new tech. all new tech has kinks i bet if u went looking u'd find just as many probs with hd-dvd. look man i hate sony but i'm not gonna moan about everything they do. i wouldn't be paid to have a sony tv but when it comes to game systems and media they do ok. all new tech starts with probs even cd/dvds u my be able to kick em about now but they were just as fragile when they started. by the way microsoft compresion is exlusive to pc games and softwear not film or game systems as installation is needed. and the 360 isn't even on hd-dvd and there are no pc games on hd-dvd so there is no comparison in game playing so the only thing that can be comented on is the films and alltho companies have signed to one type of disc means nothing cause if one dies they'll just sign to to other. and as i've said befor stop living in the now and look at the future with blu-rays larger capasity it has greater potentual.
i'm not being biased as i'm not to keen on it for the reason it is harder to make "back-ups" of my games/films
and any way hd-dvd and blu-ray players are like £500 and i can get a ps3 which is a blu-ray player and a games console for £400 and my pokets are a little bit empty i think i know what is the better option :p
