I may or may not buy a ps3 (if resident evil 5 pc fails to go beyond 30fps :( ) and I went around looking for info..

But I got 2 differnt answers.

Guy from cash converters claims that his over prived 60GB ps3 is backwards compatible (not emulation-as in built in)

Dude from EB games claims that the 60GB's are discontinued and DON'T have that feature-only 40GB's do :(

    So...which is it?

And also-has sony made an emu for ps2/ps1 backup play yet-I just want to shove in a ps1/ps2 disc and play it like so-I'll worry about the memory card issue another time.

(by that-can you download something from the psn to the ps3 to enable that play-I know it won't be as compatible-but if it means I get a cheaper 80GB model it helps...)

80GBs with 2 USB ports cannot play PS2, but the 80GBs with four (NTSC only) can. All can play PSX games. 60GB is discontinued, but it can play PS2 games. the one in cash converters is probably second hand. (they sell higher because of the backwards compatibility).

Basically if it has 4USB ports, it can play PS2 games, if it has 2, it cannot.

..so just 4 usb ports needed?

Wish they had nstc 80GB's around here in a PAL region :(

If that from research or just something you heard on the wind loony-you know soo much XD

its whats on wikipedia. The fact that it has 4 USB ports is technically irrelevant, but if you look at the hardware listings, all the ones with 4USB ports have backward compatibility, and all the ones with 2 do not, making it a useful way of identifying.

EDIT:It's mentions (found the wiki) that the 60GB PAL does ps2...by software emulation...

DO I have to download anything?

I don't get the difference between software and hardware-other than the fact that it's built into one.

the 20 and 60 GB have the hardware built into the machine. The original 80 GB models produced up until fall 2008 can play PS2 titles (if you want an example, the 80 GB models that had MGS4 packed in with them were the last models that could play PS1 and PS2 games via system updates. Otherwise, ALL PS3 consoles play PS1 titles but not PS2.

So with the PAL ps3 60GB, it can play ps2 games-but via built in emulator?

    With possible add-ons...

Where is the older models, it's built in...

So with the compatible ps3 models, I can shove in a psx/ps2 disc and no problems-or do i have to download the the games onto the machine ?

Meh...Not sure about PAL, but I really don't see why it wouldn't. As for PSX/PS2 you just stick the disc in (at least thats how the 60GB works) Maybe someone else can clarify if the newer models that use the system upgrades can play off disc or download via Playstation network like one would do for the PSP (I would assume with PSX it may work either way)

Hrm...well I know the pal 60GB use software emulation, I thought you might have been forced to download a game onto the harddrive to play...

I'm aware that it can play psx/ps2 games, but not sure how it all really goes...sony noob-me> :(

Don't feel bad I am basing what I have said off a friend of mine for he is the one that owns a 60GB NTSC system, I myself don't have one as of yet.

Also-would I need to buy a psx usb adaptor to play older system games or will the dual shock 3 work fine with ps2/ps1 games?

Fair enough-don't worry I'm making fun of myself not you at me lol!

Dual Shock 3 should work, used it playing God of War II and it worked just fine.

Hrm...I found me a compatibility list for ps1/ps2 games :)

I best bookmark this thread-thanks for you advice...

So in reality-MOST ps2 game disc work-on account on the system is mearly pretending to be a ps2...

    Same for ps1 disc.

    Well then-if I'm up for it I may purchase a ps3-and a memory card adaptor-to give these a shot!

    Thanks guys!

(may not happen-only place locally that has them seems to be over charging me $800-not paying over $500 just yet XD)

Any more advice though would help though-anything at all (except guitar hero-wii's job)

If you don't have the memory card adaptor, then you save onto 'virtual' memory cards on the PS3 hard disk.

I thought they were needed-OH THANK YOU LOONY LEGEND!

...looks like it saves me scurrying about looking for cards-prehaps I can even send my old saves from my psp onto it...

    Is that possible?

Shame gran turismo 2 disc is beyond repair-even a buffer failed to fix it :(

Also-dumb question but there is no way to get copied games working on the ps3 is there?

it is if you want to use saves you already have on memory cards.

No idea, don't have a PSP

    No.

Fair enough on the psp one...

Hrm I have heard remours of pirating ps3 games...but the cost, and the fact that I never seen it happen down under...

I don't even own a psx-been using emu's with real disc all this time LOL!

..oh well, I'll figure out how to get RE:eek:utbreak freed from my external drive one day...

    Easy answer:
    There is an emulator for USA. You can download it but;

    4 USB entrance plays
    2 USB entrance doesn't play

    (60 GB plays without emulator)

So I have to register with psn and download them emu for the 60GB right?

(the pal one-for us Aussie's :) ) is software emulated-according to the wikipedia I saw.
