What do you mean by up to date? You can select what firmware you want them to install on it, for example v1.4 (For DSi 1.4U, 1.3U and lower) or v1.41 (For DSi 1.41U, 1.4U and lower)

 

which one of the firmware is the better of the two

 

Well, it depends on the firmware on your DS, but I suggest getting 1.41 because it works on the newest DSi firmware available right now.
