Thank you Almo for the information on the NDS Flash Carts that are available.

So now I've decided that I want to purchase a CycloDS Evolution. Any suggestions on where best to buy it from (giving consideration to price, shipping and security of purchase?) For the record I'm in the U.S.

    Thanks!

Well, your local "mom and pop" type game shop may carry them. Obviously Wal-Mart and such won't.

We have a few smaller stores that handle computers, collectibles, etc. They usually have a "backroom" that sells more "under the table" type things. If you go to the online stores you'll see deals for 50+ quantities (like 5-10 dollars off per item). These deals are for places like this that will sell them. That way they can still make a little bit of money.

Well, the flash carts themselves aren't illegal, and neither are the firmwares. Those are developed by 3rd parties and designed to play homebrew games and make you able to play MP3s, movies, etc. It's just a side effect of the developement tools ability to test and run homebrew games that allows it to run commercial games ;) Emulators aren't illegal, as long as they are using nothing owned by the company (like official bios copies).

It's the illegal copying of commercial games that is the "bad" part.

Most larger companies just stay away from it because of the "grey" area involved, because it's not worth the hassel. (Look up Dreamcast, BLEEM! and the PS1).

The official BIOS would not make them illegal. Unless if they included them with the emulator, the developers would be at risk. Generally devices do not program any media handling, they just include another player in their firmware which is a lot better. Besides, the first video format was specially made for Moonshell, so they didn't specifically make it so you can view or listen to anything.
