When will they develop Smell-o-vision &/or taste-o-vision?

    Yeah.... :p

The topic sounds silly but hey, audio & video quality has advanced so much that the viewing &/or auditory experience makes you feel like you're actually there where what you're watching &/or hearing is at.

I know that research into Holography is underway so our sense of touch would or rather might soon follow.

But what of our senses of smell & taste?

How come there are no rumors of scientists developing something like smell-o-vision where we can be able to "smell" the scents of what we are watching on a monitor? I really think something like that would make watching "cooking" shows a little more interesting :) And if there was something like taste-o-vision where if you stick your tongue up to the video monitor you can taste what was being cooked, then I think that would even inspire one to actually try out the recipe that was shown on the show, right?

Man, I really wish these kinds of gadgets will be developed in the near future.... [IMG]

Because even scientists have better things to research.

I don't know about you but I would rather not lick my TV. Also that would be annoying for other people who are in the room. And worst of all, it would mean I would have to get up to go taste the TV. Not my idea of relaxing :L

Yeah, I guess licking the TV would be a bit off, unless if it was porn though LOL!

But what if it was adapted for use when "touchable" holograms become a reality? I'd bet a Star Trek Holo-deck would suck if you can't smell &/or taste the holographic food that would be presented to you.

the former exists but is not commercially viable.

Top secret government science, you mean? Or is it simply too expensive to mass produce

    too expensive and impractical

I think holographic gaming would be fun. It would work well for RTS games as you could look down on the battlefield and grab units to move them :)

If holographic gaming does become available I'll bet it would revive the arcade industry as setting up a holodeck facility would be far too expensive if it were marketed as a home console.

By the by, what ever happened to Virtual Reality simulators? Surely with the advancements in gaming graphics & people getting more interested in First person perspective gaming you'd think people would want to play first person shooters on a VR Simulator than clicking away with a mouse & keyboard or a gamepad.

I've heard of a product that induces this kind of synesthesia... gee, I think it was called, like "mushrooms", or something. Can't remember if that's how it's spelled.

Who the fuck wants to smell the shit at a Dirty Jobs location?

This happened. You go into a big orb thingy in the middle of a Japanese arcade and play some random Gundam game in first person. That's as virtual reality as you can get now.

Well their are actually development on smell... dunno about tasting (ahhhh!!)...

Check out this upcoming movie which uses aromascope ... that actually allows you to smell a particular scene... of course it is not a movie that actually deserves to have it... check it out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spy_Kids_4

And there's always the smelloscope from Futurama that allows you smell distant objects in the universe...

This technology if developed would definately benefit various cooking shows (not that i am into them :-X)..

the futurama thing wouldnt work for this purpose, it was essentially a nasal telescope.

Well, on a serious note this was actually tried you know, back a long time ago in a movie. People who entered the cinema were given a a strip of packets with numbers and when the screen show a number you should tear that packet to get the scent. e.g A fire fight scene and the screen show '3' and you tear the packet number '3' you get the smell of gunpowder. This was also adapted into a more recent technology which didn't use packets and numbers just the smell comes out automatically. However if games are to be developed this tech may or may not used. And as for taste can somebody give an example how this can be implemented into games.

I wasn't even considering the application for gaming though.

Nasty things were indeed going through my mind when I thought of this....

I remember seeing an educational show on T.V. years ago, one of those new reporters did it...Someone had made a machine that was hooked to a computer. Somehow or other, you downloaded the taste of a foreign cuisine, and then there was this mouth piece you had to bite to taste it...

The only way I could see of having smell or taste come out of your computer screen would be to have electrical impulses stimulating your taste buds or the area of your brain which interprets tastes/smells. This would require an incredible amount of research though and in all probability would vary from person to person, meaning you'd have to somehow calibrate it. "Press the red button when you taste broccoli" perhaps?

smells can be produced chemically without much difficulty.

Do you buy replacement smells each time you want to rewatch a movie? Or do you have to keep your TV stocked up with a vast multitude of chemicals in order to allow every smell be synthesised? I don't think that chemicals are really a practical way of providing a smell with what you watch, unless they had teleportation, cold fusion or some other crazy technology.
