    Ok, i got another problem...

Now before the recent re-installation of windows 7, I had the computer freeze for small shunts (usually during video playback resulting in some ear painful moments), admin issues (i'm the admin and yet I "lack privilages" to save downloaded pics) and finally msn would keep freeing and a repair would fail.

After the format, it STILL shunts, and STILL makes msn freeze.

I have yet to encounter the permission issue but...just wtf is going on here!?

I've been told the installer disc was given to my friend as a reward for some beta testing or some crap and is blank...though I suspect pirated even though it shows a serial.

This is on a HP laptop (6830s), and I did suspect heat damage (Used to leave it running on the bed for hours at a time before i got this table thing).

EDIT:Sorry was muti tabbing and mis-posted, can this be moved to the non emulation section-I feel like a bloody noob after over a year being here...

Well Not that i no much but it sounds to me like the video playback could be caused by your graphics card? not being able to handle it? and the freezing could be ram? i am 95% sure i might b wrong but yer.

This is a forum for console games not Window 7. Go to Windows technical assistance web site for that.

    Any mods, please move :(

Also prectorian, those forums really annoy the crap out of me, I've had help on stuff like this in the past.
Non emulation help is where I posted this last time...

It was fine when this laptop was on vista.

And if youtube and dvd's screw up then...really graphics card?

I think its better to go to Microsoft.com's technical assistance page. I've contacted them several times before and they readily respond to all issues related to their products within 2 x 24 hours or latest 3 x 24 hours.

Just fill in the form they provide with as detail as you can. Give them also your PC/Laptop brand and series, your Window 7 type, Service Pack, etc. all of these you can find in your SYSTEM info under the Control Panel. Detail to them what you had done and what had happened. If require, provide to them what error messege show up etc.

The customer service is very good. If their solution does not fix your issue or still have problem, just re-send their answer along with your new condition. They will help you. But this forum is not the right place to ask such things as most members are young and lack of computer experience. If they try to help, it might only cause you more damage.

Or contact the computer brand technical site if you feel that its the hardware not the software that cause the issue. If its the hardware, then they will have to provide you free repair/sparepart replacement.

I have plenty of computer experience. Microsoft also charges a fortune for support cases. Is your hard disk defragmented?

If that's the case, I think your laptop does not support Window 7. You might need to upgrade some parts such as the Pentium or VGA Card. Likely the RAM also need upgrading. Otherwise it will crash and cause more severe damage. You need to check for compatibility before using Window 7 on an older laptop specification even though it may be just purchased.

I had a problem with these 2, I'd rather experience from a fellow user then some technical support crap as I had with many other companies in the past.

And I do not want to mess with forms just because of what's being laid out, the laptop's warrenty is expired...

And the fact i mentioned that this 7 could be pirated (and the update that conflicts blocked) just complicates matters.

Also i HATE mircosoft, I'm thinking of switching to another im client but all my msn contact's file's that I tried to recieve won't actually send... plus I'm just curious to know why...

    Not contacting microsoft, short answer.

YOU CANNOT UPGRADE A LAPTOP-THIS WAS STATED (gosh you remind me of sony's technical support...)

Well it did just get a total reformat...I did try that before the format but no change.

Sorry if I start going mental to anyone, trying to answer with "not useful" answers combined with a sudden violent moodswing doesn't leave me in the best state...

At the time this cost my mother a bit over $2000aud, if you looked it up you'd see why...blue ray drive :D

You said you're trying to change the IM client? Which version are you trying to get? Your issue might just be the same as mine when I tried to upgrade from IM Live 2008 to IM Live 2009. Your contact list might have gone bizzard? Anyway, this might or might not help. But I'll post below what I received from the technical support person. Hopefully it might help you recover your 'livecontactlist.txt' file.

    **Their respond to me**
It is possible that your contacts cache folder is corrupted when you try to upgrade to Messenger 2009. User cache store is a folder containing data about your Windows Live Messenger settings as well as your contact list information. To resolve this, we need to refresh your contact's cache. To do this, please follow the steps below.
    a. Exit Messenger, if the Messenger icon appears in the notification area at the far right of the task bar, right-click the Messenger icon in the notification area, and then click Exit.

    b. Change the Windows Explorer settings.
    1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore to open Windows Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the Advanced settings list, select Show hidden files and folders under Hidden Files and Folders.
    5. Click to clear the Hide extensions for known file type's check box.
    6. Click OK to close the Folder Options window.

    c. Delete files that are using when you sign in and the Contacts Cache folders.
    i. Click Start, click Run, type "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL" then delete all files in the folder.
ii. Click Start, click Run, type "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL" then delete all files in the folder.
iii. Click Start, click Run, type "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts" then delete all files in the folder.
iv. Click Start, click Run, type "%USERPROFILE%\Contacts" then delete all files in the folder.

    d. Sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.
If issue persists and you want to revert back to Windows Live Messenger 8.5, please follow the steps below.
    1. Uninstall Windows Live Messenger 2009:
Note: When you uninstall this, all Beta programs like Windows Live Mail Beta, Windows Live Photo Gallery Beta will also be removed since these programs are integrated.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
    2. Click on Windows Live Beta (all programs) then click Change/Remove
    3. Select Uninstall then click on Continue.
    4. Under the selection "You installed these earlier", click on Continue.

^ ^ I hope this could assist you a bit if your issue is the contact list.

You know... It could very well be the laptop that's causing it. Try installing Linux and see.

you can upgrade laptops, it just costs a small fortune.

Try switching back to Vista, you said you had no issues there. =]

Or XP, it's still the best IMO

If I could find a copy of ethier, preinstalled you see...

Oh and here is the part that scared me, when we tried to install windows 7...my mates thought I wanted XP, it gave a bsod (blue screen of death), so prehaps...it got damaged then.

But we not only formatted it, we re-installed windows 7.

And I just saw a promt that this 7 is not legit...crap.
