What's an Rpg?I mean the definition of an rpg...
This came to my mind due to modern games like Bioshock,Borderlands, and even Modern Warfare that had somekind of RPG elements...
Even Gta games has a bit Rpg elements..
Then, you have mmo like world of warcraft that being called as an Rpg.
NOt to mention games like ZELDA that some people called as an Rpg..
Then again you have Rpg game like Final Fantasy 10 that felt linear and not very Rpgish...
    Opinion please...

RPG stands for Role-Playing Games, right now it is mostly terms of games where involve leveling, having STR, DEX, VIT and such.

It's kinda hard to describe now....

    I don't know....

I keep thinking Role-Playing Games is a game where we, the player, really have a connection with the game's world.
Games like "Mass Effect" or "Fable" where we have our own characters and makes our own choices is a lot different than only following a normal story.

RPG games to me mean one thing, "Customisation". Pretty muc hany game that allows you to customise a Character, Item or Monster is what an RPG game is to me.

The reason I like RPG games so much is because of how long the game takes to finish, it really is worth the money. Not to mention that most RPG games tend to have a great story behind it, which I just love.

That's it briefly I would think..

They can be either Linear or Free Roam... (Borderlands is fairly free roaming... Most Final Fantasies are Linear for a while until you're halfway through the game and able to use an aircraft)

Generally there are many kinds of RPG, it all depends on how the game is made..

But I agree, ultimately, with what Galih said, where we have a connection with the characters and the gaming world, where we can influence the choices made throughout the game.

To know what an RPG is, you need to go back in time some 20 or 30 years, to a garage in Wisconsin. There, one of the most revolutionary inventions in the gaming world was made.

    Dungeons and Dragons.

If a game can be traced back to using elements that defined D&D, then its an RPG.

So you mean the RPG-7 made in U.R.S.S.
But the game means do "more live" things on a game like eatin', sleepin', hungry, and all status like that.
Today it's hard that games that haven't RPG things on it.

RPG means ( Role Playing Game)
    -have a long story line
-have a sub story line like sub quest or something like that (e.g:looking for party members and such)
-have a lot of characters to choose from a party of course
-RPG games have great OST (e.g chrono cross games)
-and you cannot finish this game in one sitting i tell you (in case you cheated and already played the game)
    - customization (equipment,healing items,spells etc)

thats all i can think for now ^.^V peace out

Oblivion and fallout3 are both RPGs and they only have one playable character.

I played it many times but I found the game repetitive and the choices i made weren't that diverse as they could be...

Sir,by your definition then God of War is an Rpg,Dota is an Rpg,command and conquer 4 will be an Rpg...lol

I dont want another meaning,i know Rpg is role playing game but what does it mean to role play your character?what are roles anyway?

Imagine you are in a film/movie, and the director gives you a script. you learn your words and cues, you visit the costume and makeup sections, and you go on set. The camera starts and you act the part you have been given. You are now role playing as your character in the script.

I have to disagree with that one...
Black Sigil on the DS is an RPG but the music is horrible.(At least the in-battle music is)
