What should I get?

For the past few months I've been craving a macbook. But now after exploring some possibilities and doing some research, I am having second thoughts.

Last night, I read this thread:
    https://www.romulation.org/forum/index.php?topic=4899.0

And everybody unanimously agrees that Windows > Mac.

    So what should I do?

Should I stick with my original intent of getting a mac?
or should I switch to windows?

If I am to switch, can you suggest a laptop to me that is easy to upgrade and comfortable to use?

Laptops are not meant to be upgraded, when you buy it it comes as is.

You can swap out the hard drive on most though.

My hp wasn't bad-sure it's got stupid vista but hay-it plays resident evil 5...even if I must turn everything off to run it XD

    Um...it's a 6830s...

It has a blue ray drive :)

Cd burner but o dvd burning...oh well-an external helped that.

Laptop upgrades are mostly limited to hard disk and RAM.

What do you want it for?

    Well I'm 14.
I don't have a job or anything that has any requirements.

I like games and I like making movies.

then you do not want a laptop. Laptops struggle with even fairly undemanding games, due to their low power hardware and relatively poor thermal characteristics, and the low power CPUs found in laptops are not at all suitable for video rendering. You would be much better off building a desktop PC. It would be cheaper too.

    Building?
    That sounds daunting...

Any suggestions on where to start?

first tell me what your budget is, I'll help you find the parts and make sure they're all compatible with each other, then there's plenty of internet resources to help you put them together.

Well something under $1000 US would be ideal.
But if I do a little "compromising" I might be able to push it up to $1500.

Ok, give me a couple of days to get a spec worked out. $1k USD will get a nice PC.

    Thanks a lot!
I'm in no rush because I still need to do some "convincing".

If this helps at all, this is a computer I have at home that I'm willing to take apart.

    Microsoft Windows XP
    Home edition
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 2

    Intel Pentium III Processor
999 MHz, 512 MB of RAM

    NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 (Microsoft Corporation)

I wonder why it's so slow...
Is there anyway to restore system settings? To wipe everything?

I would say that get a mac. They have the Intel Processor. You could run windows and mac at the same time.

the intel processor is exactly what makes mac not worth buying. Its a massively overpriced, non-upgradable PC with a fisher-price OS.

wont be necessary, thats all old hardware.

I like my Intel Mac and my Power PC mac. There is noting wrong with macs.

Nothing wrong with mac's except hardly anyone develops for the OS and it cost's half of your salary.

There is no advantage to buying a mac over a PC. It costs way more and can't do anywhere near as much unless you dual boot windows.

The only reason for buying a mac disappeared when they started using intel processors.

What did they use before Intel?

Motorola PowerPC. They were slower in terms of raw clock speed but had a superior architecture. Somewhere along the line Apple decided ghz figures on paper were more important and dropped motorola for intel.

Is there a way I can clean my computer?
    Like as in delete everything?

you can format the hard disk but you then need to reinstall the operating system from scratch, and all your programs, so its quite time consuming. Back up everything you don't want to lose first.
