What do I do with a .mdf file?

  1. I finally got XenoGears disk one to download, but I can't get it to run. I extracted the contents of the .rar file, and all that's in it is a .mdf file and a small .mds file, neither of which is recognized by ePSXe. The .mdf file seems to be large enough to be the game, but I can't do anything with it...

you need alcohol 120%, and you mount the .mds (mds is like .cue for cue/bin) onto a 'virtual CD drive' which makes your computer think the CD (actually the mdf file) is a real CD in a real CD drive. Then you configure the CDROM plugin on ePSXe to point to the 'virtual' CD drive, and use the 'run CD' command in ePSXe

Don't you mount those things by using things like Nero?

oh, and that last post sounded funny, mainly because when you hear Alchohol and Mount in the same sentence... ;D

nero is a CD burning application, and it has it's own CD drive emulator, but that can only handle .iso and .nrg (nero's native format). .mdf is alcohol's native format so you use alcohol (120% or 53%) for .mdf images.

  5. Is there any way to use that program (or any other) to convert the file to a more easily usable format? Being a trial program, this thing will probably expire on me at some point...

nope, converting images rarely works. What you could do is mount it, then use the 'copy CD' function in your burning program to create an image of the mounted CD.
