if yes then are they the same as downloading and applying patches or games or new flashcart versions?

Skins are themes that usually just change the backgrounds and icons. Download them from http://www.ndsthemes.com/, look in DSTT. Usually skins are just backgrounds packed together, and you overwrite the default skin to get it. Look in your firmware files, see if there are any background images etc. in there, if so, download the theme, extract it, take the backgrounds, and overwrite the ones already on your firmware, which should have the same name.

to change your TTDS skin is the same as updating your flashcart?

 

Yes sort of, just go into the folder with the Theme's backgrounds, and overwrite them with your own.
