I got an R4 like last year that I bought from a friend at my school and I just began downloading things on to it. Anyway, I hear a lot of words like “patch” and “firmware” and more things like that that I really don’t understand the meaning of. I was just wondering if someone could post a dictionary on the important terminology I should know when using an R4ds or any other flashcart for that matter.

Just so I know them for future reference when downloading a game.

Firmware-It's the OS (operating system) of any flash cart, without it it won't even load, one missing file will also prevent them from working, but they can never damage the cart

Patch-Adding a supplicant/add on that the game normally doesn't have, like adding english to an otherwise all japanese game like jump ultimate stars.

Normally it's to get past the "anti piracy" files that prevent the rom from working straight away.

There are many other terms, best way to know is to encounter and ask when you come across.

Alright. Thanks, but when you add a patch from somewhere, where exactly to you download it to? I save it to my documents (i think) and then I put it on my R4, but which folder should I put it at or just where period? Here are the folders that pop up when I open my R4 in My Computer: System, Games, Moonshl, and Music. Say I downloaded Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and It was stored in the games section, but it doesn't work. I download the patch and where do I put it? Sorry if i'm not making any sense. It's my first time downloading games on my R4.

The patch is directly applied to the game via the use of a patching program (the patch goes INSIDE the rom).

Depends on what format the patch is, usually typing in the file extension and adding "patcher" via google works.

Like "DPS patcher" for the Jump ultimate stars patch, that patch is in DPS :)

...and when your done you put the finished game (keep a backup of the un-patched one incase something went wrong) where the games normally go in the r4, unfortunatly because I detest r4's and due to lack of experience I have no clue where to put them.
