What programme? Are you sure you didn't just stumble upon a virus posing as security software?

It was likely some virus that was posing as security software. One of those deals that'll tell you that you have over 1,000 infections or some shit and that you need to pay for the program in order to fix it.

    Anyways, moved to non-emulation help

    That's very likely what happened.

The only thing close to what he's describing that I can think of is the "Microsoft Genuine Software Tool" or what ever they call it that comes with every version update that checks to make sure you aren't pirating any Microsoft software.

Microsoft has nothing to gain by exploiting the security flaws in its own OS. You had malware. You can avoid getting malware by not being an idiot with what you download or install. There are many reasons to lose respect for Microsoft, but this isn't one of them.

They made vista, that's enough to lose respect for them ::)

Yes Tirith,I think this is what you mean

    http://blogs.technet.com/mmpc/archive/2010/02/24/if-it-calls-itself-security-essentials-2010-then-it-s-possibly-fake-innit.aspx

People could quite easily think they are installing Microsoft Security Essentilas.

IS Microsoft Security Essentials EVEN GOOD? I mean the moment I read "Microsoft" in the name of the AV I immediately had my doubts if it was any good.

I had this virus two weeks ago (if it's the one i think it is). It's called the Antivirus Soft Virus.
System restore didn't work for me; i had to uninstall it manually. I can't be certain if it'll affect your P.C in the same way, but when it infected me and stopped me accessing my applications, if i rebooted; as soon as the desktop becomes usable i had about five seconds in which to launch an application before the virus started blocking everything. I used this time to run the applications and access the registry to purge it from my system.
I think that it got onto my computer through IE temporary files despite the fact that i rarely use it.

The security software i currently run is Malwarebytes (full edition) and ESET Smart Security 4; they have stopped me getting reinfected so far...
It has gotten good reviews but i don't know how effective it is against this particular virus...

It actually came top of a respected review-it beat Kaspersky and Nod32.

Your virus was probably hiding in the SVI so it would keep coming back until you deleted all your system restore points.
