    HD and SD are not formats as such, they refer to High Definition and Standard Definition (normal TV) HD has a higher resolution (more pixels in each image) than SD thus is supposed to be better quality.

    h264 and xvid are codecs (compressor-decompressers) used to encode the video signals in. xvid is the most widely used of the two, however h264 is much higher quality for the same size or smaller files.

    sometimes they are the codec someone has used to encode it like Xvid and other thims its just the encoders signature.
    the actuale file formats will be things like .avi .mpg .ogg .rmv .wmv and so on
    but as long as you have a good little player like zoom player or VLC and a good codec pack you don't need to worry about file extentions

    when i play a vid in Xvid version it works fine but when i play a video in h264 version, the video is like moving in slow motion, its no longer consistent with the audio

    then it either wasn't encoded properly or theres something wrong with your computer. What are you trying to play it with?

    Awesome, K-Lite is one of the best codec packs, never even heard of "Combined Community".

    I had combined community pack before K-lite.

    It's a crappy knock-off of K-lite, like Splenda is to sugar.

    I use the Ace mega codecs pack. I've found it to be better than K-lite/

    Like it having more codecs? I don't use a wide range of media formats.

    yea you can see that the file of ace mega is bigger than k lite almost twice the size around 40mb but i still prefer using k lite has bee using it ever since hard to change just like people that insist on using video player like the infamous VLC player lol

    Synonyms 1. disreputable, ill-famed, notorious. 2. disgraceful, scandalous; nefarious, odious, wicked, shocking, vile, base, heinous, villainous this is the synonyms of infamous lol anyway vlc is not a really good video player for example when playing video the subtitle can go off as in a distorted way so you can't see it properly and sometime timing go wrong .on the other hand k lite doesn't have this problem i did however encounter problem where i cant read certain video's subtitle(its anime fansub) but after i download the newest version of k lite it works like a charm maybe because i have been using the same one for more than a year lol lack update as for vlc it can display the subs but encounter problem like the one i describe but dont just take my word for it vlc is really very glitchy ^_^

    That's probably because it has more and updated codecs.

    VLC is so popular because it can play pretty much anything you throw at it, including DVDs and does so without you having to install extra codec packs,DVD decoders,etc. Plus, it's a small file and light on system resources.

    Unsupported formats

    As of 0.8.6i, VLC is unable to play files using the following formats:

    * Fraps
    * Musical Instrument Digital Interface (.mid/.midi)
    * RealMedia (.rm)
    * RealMedia Variable Bitrate (.rmvb)
    * IVR (Internet Video Recording, which is made by Real Player).
    * This version is unable to take snapshots of videos, when you try to take a snapshot it will give you Don't Send Error. (Only with the Windows version. Mac and Linux version of VLC 0.8.6i takes snapshots without problems).
    ^_^ hehehe

    all of which are proprietary formats, aside from midi which is fairly specialised and and anyone using midi would likely have special software.
