My PC can only support an AGP card up to 4x. So I when I was looking for a new video card, I saw some that say AGP 4x/8x, and I was wondering if one of those would work with my PC.

Here's an example of what I mean:

I'm not buying this particular card, it's just the first one I found with AGP 4x/8x

It will. It will just run at 4x speeds.

I would doubt it, IIRC 8x is not backwards compatible with 4x.

Odd... I figured that it would still function, just at lower speeds. It says that hte interface speeds are 4x and 8x so it should work on a agp 4x port.

After doing a little more research on the subject, I have found out that it will run with AGP 4x, but at a lower quality.
I think I will go with this card

Even if it doesn't go to it's full potential, it's still better than my Geforce 8400gs

If you want the best working on 3D application,,
i recommended to upgrade your AGP to PCI Express,, (so,you must change your computer)..(",)

I would, But I don't have that much money right now

a geforce 8400gs is about as good as you're going to get on AGP. I would suggest saving your money until you can afford to build a new PC.

the 8400 I'm running right now is a PCI video card, so the one I found would be better

AGP cards wont go any higher than 8400 if they even go that high. the FX5200 is NOT better than an 8400.

DO NOT touch HIS. Their cards are horrendously unreliable.

It'll be cheaper in the long run to upgrade your entire rig. I honestly don't see why you'd buy an AGP card when they're being phased out.

I think they were phased out quite some time ago, I personally am on my 3rd PCI-E based computer. AGP 8x was the defacto standard for graphics cards for quite some years so I would say an AGP 4x computer is not worth upgrading now. IIRC my 400mhz K6 machines are AGP 4x, certainly anything newer than PIII would be 8x.

There's still some vague support out there, but I do agree we've moved into PCI-E territory. Honestly I don't see why anyone would bother trying to upgrade a PC with a board that uses parts that have been obsolete for five years. Best to save up, buy a new rig and go from there in my opinion.

My PC is a P4 built in 2003... But it's a Dell, and I know that you know how Dell can be when it comes to hardware

P4? Could be worse, but not much. Really, you're much better off saving for a new rig.

I had a laptop with Pentium 2 and I sold it for about 9$. how much worse is that?

Well, I'm going to have a small sum of money coming in fairly soon, I may use a bit of that for a new PC
