ok. so I'm kinda new to the psx emulation scene, so this is likely a very foolish thing to ask, but how do i get this game to run on epsxe 1.7.0? all the other iso files that i have downloaded from this site were ccd or cue files and run easily after they are unzipped and what not.

vagrant story is a mdf file. whatever that means. :-\

    maybe i'm missing a step?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

i'm using the p.e.o.ps. sound and video plugins if that helps at all.

Download the SCPH1001.bin file and put it in the bios folder. Next download Pete's OpenGL2 PSX GPU 2.0.9 found here: http://emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psx/psxplugins-tools.html and put it in the plugins folder. Then download burutter.dll and zlib1.dll and put them in the epsxe170 folder. Open ePSXe and follow through the setup wizard. Next go to File -> RunISO and select the .bin .iso .cue .mdf (the game file basically.)

did all that when i first got epsxe.

see the issue is that i cant run mdf files for some reason. i'll select the file, and the eumulator will boot up, give me a black screen and thats it.

strange, isn't vagrant story a .img file or a .bin? Anyway, i don't think i never try playing vagrant story of that file extension before, so mine only advise to u is this: find a .img or a .bin version of vagrant story, that should solve your problem.

No, don't do that, .mdf is an image file just like .bin and .iso. It's just ePSXe that's horribly limited.
Go install Alcohol 52% which is a free version of Alcohol 120%. (or any other virtual drive software) This will create a virtual drive on your PC where you can mount the image file and your computer will think it was inserted as if you had burned it and inserted it in your real CD/DVD drive.

Next just run the game as you would if you had burnt it and inserted it in your real drive.

He said he was using ePSXe 1.7. And .mdf is a supported file type of 1.7. He should be able to run it without mounting the image just like a .bin, .iso, .cue, etc.

I have this game and it works fine. Don't know what the problem could be. I know this will be a silly question but when you start and load the ISO, do you choose Run CDRom or Run ISO? You must pick Run ISO and select the game, then it should start without any problems. Make sure you have loaded up the bios file and also make sure you have correctly configured all plugins.

as far as i can tell its up and ready to run, and this is confirmed by the fact that alundra, valcuary <---(that may well be spelled horridly wrong...) profile, and tactics ogre all work fine. you run vista on your cpu? perhaps it's the game.... does anybody know another mdf file game that i could try?

I made my own copy of Final Fantasy 7 from my game into an MDF file (it also has an MDS file to support it). I tried my copy of ePSXe 1.7 and it runs the MDF file without any problems. I tried the Run ISO method and mounted it on the virtual drive and tried with Run CDROM. I really can't see what is wrong. Seeing as you can run other games, then that's good, means the emulator works fine.

Therefore I would think it is a problem with the ISO itself. Where did you get it from? I once downloaded an Ape Escape ISO and it was also an MDF file, however, it just wouldn't start. The screen stayed black. I then downloaded the copy provided by Romulation and noticed that there was about a 10-20 MB difference in the size of the files, and Romulation's copy worked perfectly. Basically the morale of the story is that the file might just be corrupt or something and not the proper ISO. I suggest you try downloading it again from somewhere else if that is indeed the problem. Good Luck, sorry couldn't help.

if that is the case, then i have a bug to report to romulation, as that is where i got the ISO. i really doubt that its the ISO, as this is the greatest emulation site that i have ever come across in all my years of rom hunting ( about 7 years ). but i suppose that even the great err form time to time. anybody know where i can get another download of the game?

The thing with ePSXe is that it is all about the plugin configuration. What works with one game may not work with another. You just have to play around with settings and options. Try different plugins, etc.

That's true but I have played so many games with the exact same configuration and have never had a problem. There are those specific games that need specific set ups to get them to work though, like Resident Evil 3 and Breath of Fire 4.

its possible then, that vagrant story is one of those games. guess I'll take that 90+ plugin file that is stickied at the top of this listing and get to work on configurations and what not.

its going to be a long night.... XD

EDIT: or not. the link is dead.

    /sigh

    off to google then.
