Vagrant Story sounds horrible on PCSX

I got vagrant story off of romulation and loaded it in pcsx. the game runs smoothly and everything, but all the sound effects are really bad. I tried getting it off a different site (although it's probably the exact same file since the mounted image has the same name) and it has the exact same problem.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

pcsx is the only psx emulator i could get working for my macbook

 

Have you tried ePSXe?

 

Are you certain that the sound has been sync'ed with the emulator? Check the emu's settings ;-)

 

I'm on a mac so no. Unless there is some way to use the linux version on a mac?

I've tried messing with every sound setting and nothing changes it.
