    If I unrar a file that is 1.28 GB in size, how much data will it take up?

    Depends on the compression ratio. If you open the rar file with WinRAR it will tell you the ratio. That ratio is Compressed/Uncompressed. So you can do the math and calculate the uncompressed size (I think it might actually tell you the uncompressed size too though).

    You can open the file without extracting it, and view the file stats.

    Well, most packed file has...
    1GB file = 3/4GB
    or..
    3GB = 7/8GB

    those are just a common file size that people always use.
    Just like Tirith said, it depends on the compression ratio.
