Ugh! Just Found out a Very Crappy "Feature" of Windows 7 Carried over from Vista

I just found out that there is a very stupid feature, or perhaps a major flaw, in Windows 7 (that first popped up on Vista) in regards to System Restore points & defragmenting one's hard drive.

Apparently, the Volume Shadow copy service DELETES most if not ALL your restore points to free up space whenever you do a defrag! This regardless if you still have a lot of space on your hard drive or not to run a defrag. And to make matters worse, Diskeeper is the only third party defrag tool out there that has a workaround for this :( You would think that Microsoft should have made an update to fix this issue but noooo~! It has to be a third party developer who does a fix for this charging you $39.99USD for an app you rarely would use. Yeah I know $39.99USD is cheap for an American, but here that's already1,780 Php & there's no way I'd spend that much :p

So now, I'm left with two options...

    1. Never ever defrag again so I can keep my restore points in tact or

    2. Defrag & hope I never run into a situation where I'd need to do a system restore.

Both of which are not a win-win situation.

And speaking of system restore points in Windows 7.... WTF!? The MINIMUM required allocated space for system restore is 5GB! That's freakin' huge!

Defragmenting in Windows 7 is such a hassle too as it takes damn too long & the interface is bare bones :( I had to switch over to defraggler so I can have a decent graphical representation of how much things are fragmented/consolidated on my hard disk.

Another reason for me to miss XP :(

if diskeeper is only $40 then thats a massive bargain, it's extremely good software. As for never using it, you're not supposed to use it. You install and configure it and its completely automatic from that point on, preventing disks getting fragmented and defragmenting them when necessary. I have it on all my computers.

there is a third option though. Disable volume shadow copy.

The way how Diskeeper functions is indeed intriguing, imagine preventing fragmentation even before it occurs.

But sadly I really can't splurge 1,780Php that easily as I'm still saving up & am still quite broke after my major system upgrade.

But that too would mean disabling system restore points.

as far as I can tell, disabling volume shadow copy does not disable system restore. (I have both disabled anyway), also the minimum disk space for system restore is 1% of the partition size, which isn't necessarily 5GB, on my C: drive its 615MB. There is very little point in having system restore enabled on drives other than the system drive.

I still use xp at home but I use windows 7 at school every day.
    No need to miss xp.

I think it's more along the lines of the stock defrag program that screws with your system restore points, not VSS. VSS picks up the numerous writes/rewrites and treats those as new restore points, when really, the only thing that has changed is the data is reorganized.

At least, this is what I managed to figure out from Diskeeper.

Also, Diskeeper is rather easy to get online. You just need to find someone with a working upload.

I'm using PerfectDisc, which is much better, Diskeeper?
