You can do this if you don't want to see your avatar on top of the forum page, for example.
It will really disappear. Not even a white page with an red cross in it.

Warning! You block the host where the picture is from. img229.imageshack.us for example.Warning!

Step 1: Right-click on the image.
Step 2: Click on the option above properties. Block Images from (HOSTNAME). (Not sure what it exactly is because I have a Dutch version)
Step 3: The image will be blocked. There will be an message on top of the website where you can undo it.
Step 4: Enjoy your blocked image.

I hope this will help some people out.

There is an second option. Download the Firefox add-on "Addblock PLUS" and right click on the image and click: Block image.

anand, you have to right click an image, like my avatar.

it should say Block Images from img.photobucket...

however, if you don't want advertisements off of random sites, you can't block the flash stuff so get an addon for that.

It still doesn't have that option. I do use Flashblock for Flash.

I disabled Adblock Plus, and restarted Firefox. I have the option now. I guess Adblock Plus just disables that feature of Firefox, since it's a better alternative.

Alternately you can just go to your profile's user settings & change the setting to dis allow showing Avatars & sigs

That was just an example though, this should be able to block all images, minus ads etc, since the URL changes all the time.

I know I've abandoned Opera for sometime now, but did you know its blocker system was one of the best I've seen, it blocks everything, no add ons required. But sad to say, the browser itself started to suck after Opera 9.25

this is nice for blocking adult ads on other sites.

other small sites that actually need advertising to stay alive, i don't block.

Nearly every ad URL though changes, so it doesn't usually work.

it works for me until they replace it with flash crap.

then i got an addon to do the job.
