Like what the thread says... I want to make some minus-one (vocal-less) tracks on my computer but I don't know which software to use.
If you guys could help me out that'd be great.

Also, I'm broke right now so I can only use freeware...
    Thanks in advance!

audacity is the main freeware audio editing program

Also do you mean creating tracks from scratch or removing vocals from existing tracks?

If you can find a decent torrent for Adobe Audition, take it. It's waaaay better than Audacity, although it is a little more complicated, the complexity goes a long way in quality and the amount of polishing you can do to the recordings you'll do.

And if all you really want to do is remove the vocal tracks of fully recorded songs, there are some Vocal Removing software all over the net, I'm just not sure if they're free. Try google and work from there.

Oops, yeah sorry. I forgot to mention that I want to remove vocals from existing tracks.

I have audacity already but it doesn't do the job right. the bass and drums get ripped out too.

@dancubs- where do you find Adobe audition? is it free? also, google doesn't provide much. most of the vocal removing softwares have you buy them first.

adobe audition is not free, however you might still be able to find cooledit, which was free when it existed (cooledit got bought by adobe and became audition).

Removing vocals is an extremely inexact science and generally involves loss of other audio data as well because it is not possible to distinguish the vocals from the backing. The chances are audacity did the best job possible with that track, some tracks can have vocals removed more easily than others.

I guess there are torrents or limewire peers that could share Audition for you. But as LoonyLion has said, even if you may have the best software, it is still hard and almost impossible to remove the vocals from a track, depending on what song it is you're trying to make into a minus one. If it came from say an artist who is big and is signed to a record label, chances are you will not be able to butcher his/her/their track because it has gone through a couple of mixdowns and masterings, which just means they put all the tracks together permanently for it to sound it's best when it's being played for listeners.

There is another solution though. If you have a DSi, or if you have a friend that has a DSi, convert whatever song you want to turn into a minus one into an .AAC file and put into the DSi's SD card and play it through there. Use the DSi Sound's Instrumental filter. Depending on the track, the filter usually takes off the vocals of the track, but sometimes it also removes some of the drums, or makes the guitar sound thin. I've tried it, it works on some of the tracks perfectly, on some though, other instruments have gone along with the vocals.

I hope you find a better solution if none of ours help, whatever it is you wish to do with the minus ones.

the DSi is unlikely to do a better job than audio editing software, they're both doing the same thing.
