    1.Manhunt 2 (Wii)

This action game from the makers of Grand Theft Auto caused a media frenzy that lasted for weeks. Why? It's gratuitously violent and requires the player to physically mimic the action on screen, such as jerking the Wii remote downward to shove a pen into an enemy's head. The most gruesome shots in the game have been partially censored, but this is one Wii game that's definitely not for everyone.

2.Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

This might look like a patriotic game that will teach the kids American values, but it has an M-rating for a reason. Too-realistic combat that includes disturbing scenes where attack dogs chew out your companion's throats put this war game over the top. Buy the toned-down Nintendo DS version of the game instead, which has a more kid-friendly 'T' (for Teen) rating.

    3.Beowulf

The game based on the animated Robert Zemeckis movie (in theaters now), which is based on the epic poem we all studied in high school English class, focuses less on its literary relevance and more on the gore. Beowulf's ability to go into a blind killing rage by filling up an in-game meter isn't exactly the stuff of term papers.

    4.Conan

Like Beowulf, Conan might sound like a harmless fantasy-based game, but much like Arnold Schwarzenegger film, this gory game includes rampant bloodshed, bodily dismemberment and a little bit of female nudity.

    5.Gears of War (PC)

The 'war' in this game has nothing to do with history, it's all about mowing down aliens with bullets and chainsaws as they attempt to invade your home planet. Even though this game has won a million accolades, the bloodletting rivals a slasher flick and the main characters drop the F-bomb like it's going out of style.

    6.Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (Wii)

This scary Wii shooter pits you against zombies and other creatures that go bump in the night. The game follows all the usual zombie laws, meaning that blowing off their heads is essential for survival. Not for the squeamish, plus it requires players to point their Wii controller at the screen like an actual gun.

    7.Unreal Tournament III (PC, PS3)

This so-called "frag-fest" is really a no-holds-barred shoot-em-up mixed with the capture the flag concept. Shoot an opponent, and he doesn't just fall down – he explodes into bloody chunks that bounce around on the ground. Plus, scripted in-game language includes its fair share of four-letter words that you won't want junior taking to school with him.

No offense, but I don't think you made this article. The grammar and spelling is different from yours... reveal your source!

Other than that, this is a quite informative topic.

Unreal is offensive? i've been playing Unreal Tourmanent since i was 8 (UT as well as Quake). i agree that Manhunt is a bit...uh...gory. but seriously...just because a game has an M rating, does not mean it will cause psychological harm on all kids.

I think there are even more gruesome games out there. Though not the latest and not the best graphics. Say soldier of fortune? You can practically take your enemies apart limb by limb.

the first game that was probably extremely violent was probably turok. compare the games during the time and tell me if there anything as similar [note, i'm not too sure about pc games during the time as i was not into pc games].

if you want kids to face reality then they should be allowed to play these violent games instead of having to face something even more real, isn't that what plato said or something.

I have to say that Unreal Tournament and COD4 are fine. The games fine the first 3 times around, but one scene makes it a horror to children? And Unreal is just like any other shooter. The weapons they have in the picture aren't even realistic. Thats why its UNREAL. I mean, you wouldn't just give these games to a child, and say "here, killing is fun!" The parents probably explain to children that its wrong never do it and don't get ideas from the game. And while I'm at it, I hate Jackass Thompson.

I would like to suggest Smackdown vs Raw. I don't think men in tights grapling each other is really apropriate, this has many psychological effects of children. I mean, what do you think REALLY inspired Seph's urge to watch "hot polar bear action".

Haha joking. (About the Seph part.)

I have to avoid Manhunt 2 seeing as I live in Britain and can't buy it.

They don't sell Manhunt2 in Britain? Is it too gruesome for Britain's standards?

no, the country is run by politically correct assholes who think that kids get ideas from violent video games.

Jack Thomson is so fail that he can't get such a law passed, the British apparently aren't. :)

Then exactly, what games are suitable for British standards? Dora the explorer. The Winx Club?

We just have laws over what can/cannot be sold to people of each age. As far as I know, most states allow anyone to buy any game. Ireland has some pretty strong media controls compared to us, and I reckon the whole reason manhunt 2 is getting buggered around here is because of the US fiasco with it. There was also some guy who murdered his friend and played manhunt when the game first came out, and "used weapons available in manhunt" (hammer). Parents blame game to avoid being blamed themselves.

That's rubbish. Unless a person is mentally unstable, I don't think anyone actually murders just because they played a game.

have you ever watched the movie "clockwork orange". it's a good example of conditioning a person to become more calm and less rebellious. by having a person playing constant violent video games, it conditions the person to become violent.
