Tibet has been involved in a long stuggle for independence from China since 1950. For some background info this is the wiki page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibet Now don't moan you people who don't like wikipedia, have a look and you will find it is one of the best researched pages on wiki. Do you support Tibet's campaign for independence or do you think that the Tibetan people are better in the hands of the Chinese? Please give your thoughts and arguments for, or against, an independent Tibet.
I'm surprised that no one has commented on this topic. It's a really good question with a simple answer (in my opinion). Free Tibet! I've watched several documentaries on the the subject and it is clear that the people of that land suffer under Chinese rule. I don't think the Chinese people themselves are to fault for the the actions of their government, as they are often oppressed in the same ways as the Tibetans. Unfortunately, the USA has little leverage over the Chinese establishment given our debt. It makes you wonder if the "live and let live" mentality is viable in a world where materialism in more alive than ever.
I think its better for Tibet to be a SAR, Special Administative Region, like HongKong and Macau, instead of gaining a complete independence from Mainland China. If you look at the map of Tibet, Mt. Everest is located in that area, i dont believe china will give away the priced Mountain. For security reason, China has one of the best and powerful armies in the world, i believe they are lucky to even be included to China's protection. Also, as we can now see, China is the growing giant in world economy, why would Tibet remove herself from that advantage? As a SAR, they would enjoy internal freedom while getting external protection.
china's army is far from one of the best or most powerful. It is one of the biggest, but that is about its only claim. Most of their equipment is ex-cold war/USSR cast offs.
The thing about your post is that Tibetans ARE NOT enjoying those protections or economic bonuses. Many have been exile to Indian where the Tibetan Government in Exile was established under protection. Those that remain in their native lands are abused as second class "citizens" and have a standard of living far below the immigrating Chinese in Tibet. The Tibetans are not lucky at all to be under the Chinese government's thumb.
Yeah, sorry, biggest was my point. Well, can't they just file for a Special Administrative region like Macau and Hong Kong? From what i see, they are considered as a normal province, not as a Special province and let the Dalai Lama as its leader? cause, when they get independence, they will just get conquered by China or other countries, and i dont beleive the UN will protect it cause China will just veto any resolution in favor with Tibet...
People need to understand where Tibet actually came from; it is a breakaway region formed by the deposed former government of china.
