I just read that the new DSi (XL) is going to be released in Europe first quarter 2010. Japan gets it on 21st November. The screen is 4.25 inches vs. 3 inches on the DS lite. For me- I think this will be the reason I end up getting a DSi (XL). I love my lite (GBA function yee-haw) but this is a significantly bigger screen size we are going to see (on the XL) and it only weighs 100 grams more.

P.S. The XL is just what I am calling it - I can't remember it's official title.

DSi LL hits Japan Nov. 21, DS sales top 113 million

New Nintendo handheld confirmed, will sport 4.2" screens and larger stylus, cost ¥20,000 ($220.50); 11.7 million units of DS hardware sold in last six months.

Two days after it dismissed a Nikkei newswire article as speculative, Nintendo has confirmed a new version of its DSi handheld will go on sale in Japan this year.

As had been reported, the new DSi LL will sport two screens measuring 4.25" inches in diagonal diameter, far larger than the current DSi's 3.25" screens or the DS Lite's 3" screens. The DSi LL's screens will even be larger than the single screen of the Sony PSP-3000, which measures in at four inches. Despite the larger screens, the DSi LL's battery life will be a half-hour longer than that of the DSi, matching the DS Lite's 3 hours.

As shown on Nintendo Japan's official Web site, the handheld will also sport both a regular and easier-to-hold stylus shaped like a rounded pen. The handheld will go on sale in Japan on November 21 for a cost of ¥20,000 ($220.50), and will be available in three colors: Wine Red (pictured), Dark Brown, and Natural White.

No US or EU release plans for the DSi LL have yet been announced. However, the handheld is the fourth version of DS hardware in as many years, following the original DS (2004-2005), the DS Lite (2006), and the DSi (2008-2009). As part of an earnings report today, Nintendo announced that as of September 30, it had sold 113.48 million units of DS hardware, with 11.7 million units sold in the six months from April to September. The portable remains the best-selling platform in the US, selling 524,200 units during the NPD Group's September 2009 reporting period.

The DSi's introduction will raise some issues with the US' 2.2 million DSi owners who have bought games from the DSi store. According to reports, DSiWare games are not transferable to another handheld, meaning they would have to be repurchased on any new DSi. The larger screens, however, will have greater appeal to demographics with poor eyesight, such as the elderly.

That's the battery life on the highest brightness setting in average play settings. I agree - for a handheld console, it's utter crap. The DS lite quoted as matching the DSi LL's 3 hours battery life... o_O The DS lite averages around 15 to 19 hours. I think they got the charge time mixed up - the DS lite takes 3 & 1/2 hours to charge, this DSi LL takes only 3.

I won't be buying this iteration of the DS either - my DS phat I bought on launch day is still going strong. This DSi is strictly for old and/or bad sighted people.

Nice. :D The pics have been out. Looking from their color selection and size I agree that this is more aimed at the adult market. Those DSes aren't very funky, they seems to be elegant. :)

I want a larger screen, but I don't want something that bulky. So no, I won't be getting one unless my DS lite gets broken. The controls could have been better if they placed it a little lower and made it a little bigger imo.

And 3 hours of battery life? No thanks D: Screen is so tempting, though.

The three hours battery life was a translation mix-up, its actually 6 hours on full brightness, and 16 hours on lowest.

    What about mid setting?

    That is what I require..

    6 + 16 = 22

    22/2 = 11 hours.

No, it'd make all my DS games look all funky and more pixely and to me, it's a waste of production time that Nintendo could be using on making the successor.

This will result in making games look even blockier than they do on the original DSi.

We're stretching two 256x192 displays onto 4" screens. The result? Atrocious. If you have anywhere NEAR 20/20 vision (or if you have better than normal eyesight like me; 20/13), it will look like you're playing zoomed in.

No thanks. I'll take my more-portable DS Lite.

Have you tried to change the strength of the light from the ds?
The lowest strength allows you to play 14 hours.

Hmm I wonder what will hurt more if I throw it at somebody this or my DS lite.

If it does enough damage I might just by on,e if not I can always use it as a brick.

My stance on the DSi has changed a bit ever since I got to play one; the buttons on the system are superior to the Lite's, and the shoulder buttons in particular are the best yet on the DS; If Nintendo can guarantee that the XL won't have a crap picture, then I'll be getting one... but only grudgingly, since the Lite should've had those improvements without sacrificing the GBA slot.
