    I have an odd habit of liking stuff that people wouldn't like.
    LIke for example, I like ugly looking MMOs and I like really obscure shit.
    Anyone know the best and most obscure/underrated RPG of the NES/SNES Era?

    If it's going to be a japanese game, don't post it unless there's a fan translation.

    Oh it is, you need about 1000 fights just to buy a shotgun.

    Just looking through my snes collection you could also try:
    evo - search for eden (this is great)

    the rest are well known, maybe theres some you haven't heard of.
    breath of fire 1 and 2
    dragonquest 1, 2, 3 5, 6.
    the final fantasies
    lufia 1 and 2
    secret of evermore secret of mana
    7th saga
    sieken densetsu 3
    tales of phantasia
    unchartered waters
    ultima
    terranigma

    xD I don't see how it's possible I don't know off the FF series. I tried almost everything on your list, except Ultima, Unchartered Wars, 7th Saga, Evo and Breath of Fire.
    Thanks.

    Not extremely obscure but Tales Of Phantasia (as MSG suggested), the first in the Tales series and the best in my opinion. The DeJap translation is funny aswell, so if you have a sense of humor, it's good.

    And Seiken Denetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 3 I think). I haven't finished it, let alone got close to, but it's fun.

    To throw onto the translated SNES games, Treasure of the Rudras(Rudra no Hihou if you look for the ROM). You basically make your own magic spells in that one.

    Oh, before I forget, if you play Breath of Fire II, get the retranslated one since the normal US one has one of the shittiest translations known to man.

    Playing that one now xD

    You're gonna have to patch that one since I'm pretty sure it hasn't made it into any goodsets at this point. I could probably hook you up with that when I'm at home on the weekends.

    Leplace's Demon is going to be great as soon as the translation is finished. It is one of the first RPGs with a limit break system.

    OK so you want to play obscure & under rated RPGs for the NES & SNES?

    First off, you need to know that ALMOST every RPG for the NES is underrated :p

    That is, Zelda, Dragon Warrior & Star Tropics are the only RPG franchises most westerners at the time ever knew, because MOST if not all of 'em were never ported to the west. However.... if you went over to the far east, Japan that is, you'll find out that there are a ton of good NES RPGs that Nintendo of America (& I guess, of Europe as well) denied us gamers with :p

    But before I give you a complete list of Japanese RPGs that have had an English Translation patch given to them, let me first give you a few NES RPGs that are already in English but are themselves underrated.

    Destiny of an Emperor - an RPG that uses China's rich history as it's foundation.
    Faxanadu - Technically a platformer game that has RPG elements to it in the style of Zelda 2
    Shadowgate, De ja vu & Uninvited - technically "text & graphics" adventure games, but you get the idea.
    Might & magic - First person dungeon crawler RPG, a genre I particularly do not like.

    Now for the complete list of Japanese titles that have fan translations, go to this link:

    http://www.romhacking.net/?genre=&platform=1&status=A&languageid=12&perpage=50&page=translations&transsearch=Go&title=&author=

    Yeah so the list is a general list so stop bitching & just sift through the titles to find which are RPGs & which are not :p

    Also, here is the list of FamiCom Disk System games that have fan translations as well.

    http://www.romhacking.net/?genre=&platform=7&status=A&languageid=12&perpage=50&page=translations&transsearch=Go&title=&author=

    If you don't know what the hell is an FDS game read this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famicom_disk_system

    Also, do note that several NES emulators do not support FDS games & your options are indeed limited to Nestopia &/or FCEUX however I have never figured out how FCEUX runs FDS games, whereas with Nestopia it was relatively easy. Also, if you're going to use Nestopia, I suggest you use version 1.37 as it's the best, so far even though there are newer releases of it.

    Nestopis 1.37 link -> http://sourceforge.net/projects/nestopia/files/Nestopia/v1.37/Nestopia137bin.zip/download

    If you want to know why I recommend this older version, then read my complaint post on the developers forum here. -> http://www.bannister.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=60627&page=all

    And yes, that thread is about a latest unofficial release & it seems THEY ARE taking notice to my complaint, so hopefully they might reconsider fixing the stuff that was fucked up with version 1.38 & up.

    Also, if you do not know how to apply IPS patches, here is my "beginner's tutorial" on the matter.

    http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=17418.msg67500#msg67500

    As for the ones that uses UPS &/or Ninja, it's basically the same thing but they use different patching utilities.

    And since we are talking about "obscure" games, let me also recommend to you the Dragoon X Omega series:

    http://www.romhacking.net/?genre=&platform=&game=&category=&perpage=20&page=hacks&hacksearch=Go&title=dragoon+x+omega&author=

    Which are two ROM Hack games which are exceptionally kick ass games.

    Now as for the SNES, there are quite a few under rated SNES RPGs as well, first the ones already in English:

    Secret of the Stars - graphics whores might want to steer clear of this one as it is indeed visually unpleasant.
    Paladin's Quest
    Soul Blazer
    Brain Lord
    7th Saga - the world's most sadistic, bitch ass HARD RPG ever!
    Robotrek
    Illusion of Gaea
    Brandish - though the navigation system of this game is God awful

    As for Fan translations, here you go!

    http://www.romhacking.net/?genre=&platform=9&status=A&languageid=12&perpage=50&page=translations&transsearch=Go&title=&author=

    Now applying patches to SNES ROMs is a wee bit finicky, as you may need to add or remove file headers to SNES ROMs depending on what the patch file requires, so you'll need to familiarize yourself with two other ROM handling tools.

    SNESTool -> http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=17597.msg201487#msg201487
    ucon64 & its GUI Frontend u-Fox -> http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=22223.msg326713#msg326713

    You use SNESTool to add/remove file headers onto SNES ROMs. ucon64 is a ROM editing tool that lets you correct the CRC values of ROMs that often gets corrupted whenever a patch is applied onto them. The app DOES NOT remove the translation patch but it fixes the CRC value so as to make the ROM playable on an emulator or copier/loader if you have one. Do note that even if ucon64 fixes a ROM's CRC value an emulator might still label a game as a bad ROM when in fact it is not, in this case the emulator is just seeing the translation patch & not the game's CRC value per se.

    EDIT: After a whole day even :p

    I forgot to add Romancing Saga 3 -> http://www.romhacking.net/trans/416/

    to the list of fan translated games I recommend :)

    It says on the page that the translation is un-finished, but the truth is the only thing left that needs translating is the end credits so technically it is complete so try this one out too.

    Also here's another one:

    http://www.romhacking.net/trans/481/

    IT IS 100% complete now thanks to the addendum patch.
