I thought you're talking about the movie...

a download website need to have lots of mirrors downloads because it help the user to use it if other links are broken.
some download accelerator also searching for more mirror links to speed up the downloads...

... hopefully I can provide a better explanation.
A Mirror is, as in reality, a reflection, another view point, another download point.
I mean - Imagine if Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver are released, RomUlation won't be able to be stable while everyone is downloading them, so they shave some of the whoring off to sites like MegaUpload, and Rapidshare.

various answers of varying accuracy here. A mirror in internet terms is another server containing exactly the same content. Therefore RomUlation has a server in north America, and a server in Europe, both holding exactly the same content. So people can download from either, and they get exactly the same file, but the load is split between the two servers.

But aren't there Rapidshare and Megaupload mirrors on RomUlation as well?

I don't think they are used any more.

Some of the Megaupload and Rapidshare mirros are still up and running though...

I'm downloading one file through MU right now...

yes, but rapidshare/megaupload is irrelevant to the definition/purpose of mirrors.
