Nokia started research on flexible cell phone
Posted on 26.02.2008 at 11:39 in Tech News by Martin

Imagine tapping out text messages on a device the size of an index card and as flat as a piece of paper, then folding it in thirds to hold it to your ear and make a phone call. Refold it in a slightly different shape and wrap it around your wrist, where it becomes a watch and also communicates with an ear bud that lets you talk hands free. Nokia researchers, along with researchers at the University of Cambridge in England, have created an animated video describing such a vision for mobile devices, which could come in the future through nanotechnology developments.

The animation shows practical applications for several specific types of work that the scientists are developing based on their nanotechnology research, said Tapani Ryhanen, the head of multimedia devices research at Nokia Research Center. The concept video was created at the prodding of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which opened an exhibit February 24 called”Design and the Elastic Mind,”he said. Currently, the researchers have developed “bits and pieces” of the technologies envisioned in the concept “but we are not yet at the level that we could integrate those things together into a device that we’re showing in this animation,” Ryhanen said. Some features of the device could start appearing in commercial products as soon as seven years from now, Nokia said.

Intresting concept....but it's just another thing we don't need...
The time and energy it would take to develop this would be better directed elsewhere

I have to agree with you. Phones are for making phone calls, and receiving them. Maybe texting too. Anything above and beyond that (apart from stuff like a calandar and and an alarm clock) are unnecessary and drain the battery, making it less available when you need it. Additionally, it makes you more of a target for muggers, and more expensive to buy. Plus the whole concept of 'a new phone every six months', as supplied with most contracts, is just wasteful. I had the same phone for FOUR YEARS, having bought it second hand off a friend, and had it not started to malfunction due to its age, I would still be using it now. It did everything I wanted, and the battery lasted two weeks on standby compared to all the people at school with (then) new-fangled camera phones that took shit quality pictures and the battery died within a few days. I have no use for a camera phone. If I want to take pictures I have a perfectly good 8.1 megapixel digital SLR camera.

Loony makes a good point, but will people listen? It's just a new thing that'll probablybe out done in a few months...Just a thought, I think Nokia should make an enviornmentally friendly cellphone, without destroying the gorilla's habitat :-[

Exactly....I use my phone to send texts, recieve phone calls and to wake me up in the morning...
    I don't wear a watch anyway....so I don't want a phone around my wrist...
And I don't want a phone that eats apples or whatever the **** it was doing...

true, but people see it other way, i really dont get the idea of camera phone and i rare use the camera on my phone as well....the quality of the picture capture arent as good as the real camera, but then not everyone is a photographer, so what happen when you are in a cool situation and you wanted to share it with your friends? tell them? remember not everything can be replace by words, just like the other day a car hit a water pipe and create a large foutains, that is not something that you see everyday, so camera phone is handy "sometimes".

up until now, the main function of my phone is MP3 player, Phone, Calander and Clock, all its other function (internet, 3G, bla bla bla) are wasted....

lol didnt you see? batterys not a problem since it charges via the sun lol. But yeah I agree I have no use for a camera phone, i recently sold my W950i (4GB, touchscreen, ect.) cause it sucked lol, it did everything except calls and text (using the touchscreen to write texts sucks).

and only 8.1MP? what brand? Ive got a sony A100 10.2MP DSLR :)

and people spend most of their time indoors... It's roughly equivalent to people keeping kinetic watches in their briefcase

Canon EOS 350D, I had a 3.2MP Olympus compact before that.

phone with biometrix recognition (fingerprint, dna, ect ect) would be great.....what is the use of stealling the phone when the phone is next to useless if you are not the owner.

i dont think any normal person would get thier hand burn, in case of accident, i would doubt you only got your hand burn and not the rest of you (including your phone)

any smoker, cook, chef, kitchen hand, cafe assistant and generaly anyone who either has a fireplace, cooks or deals with anything else hot has the chance of getting burnt, im sure it would probly be more along the lines of a retina scan since fingerprints have thier flaws.
