The BEST Applications - soon-to-be Guide

I've been lurking lately, and I noticed a lot of "What's the best _______ ?" or, "What ______ do you use?" topics. So, I thought it would better if we could aggregate all the ideas in those threads, into a guide of sorts on good applications/services for ...whatever. It would be useful to users deciding on what they should use, or those just interested in being up-to-date with the best offerings.
Basically, you title your post what kind of app/service you're recommending, and (hopefully) why. Doesn't have to be free, but would be better if it was.
To start off

BEST MUSIC PLAYERS
1. Winamp Free/Pro - a great player overall. Simple and a good number of customization/plugins/theming.
2. Foobar2000 - the "alternative" Winamp. Small memory footprint. Again, there's a lot of customization available, but it's more complicated to tweak than Winamp (IMO)

BEST APPLICATION LAUNCHERS to launch/open programs and files quickly
1. Launchy - very fast indexing of files/apps. Good GUI.
2. Find and Run Robot (FARR) - GUI not as good, but it's fully extensible and has some great plugins.

This thread is NOT INTENDED for debates of "X is better than/totally owns Y" etc.

 

Browser - Firefox
Videos player - Power DVD

My opinion, though. You're free to yell at me if I'm wrong.

 

I'd say Media Player Classic, good all rounder Music and Video player, not customizable as look etc, but a lot of features, and free.

Also Torrent Clients:
uTorrent, fastest damn client available

Download Managers:
Flashget-lots of features, great download manager, bittorent support included etc.
Getright, good
IDM, good

Web Browser:
Firefox, the best, most customizable browser available, very fast as well as many addons

Burning Programs:
Alcohol 120%-lots of features, Virtual Drive, create images from CD/DVD, files etc.
Nero
ImgBurn etc. Like that? I have some more, just gotta think of them.

 

Also:

Download manager - I use Free Download Manager, I haven't had any problems with it, but I heard FlashGet is very good, also.

Burners - The best, for me, is ImgBurn. Burns everything, or almost everything, and has a lot of features. The last version even includes jokes!

Torrent client - UTorrent, the best, ever. Extremely fast, it doesn't need installing, and very simple.

IRC client (or whatever) - mIRC is free and great.

 

Best extracting programs -
WinRAR.

Best Music Player -
Media Player Classic ( can play almost all player extensions )

Best copy protection work arounds - AnyDVD
Best free GFX suite - GIMP , Paint.Net
Best Anti Virus - AVG , NOD32

 

I suppose that's a burner, ain't it? If so, I'll give it a try, someday.

Got to agree on AVG. Never tried NOD32, though.

 

Best IM (instant messenger) client
1. Pidgin (GAIM) - solid, open-source messenger for almost every chat service (IRC included). Customizeable. No webcam support, though.
2. Trillian - freeware, much the same functions as Pidgin, but with webcam support. GUI is a bit lacking for me.
3. Digsby - in open beta, has e-mail integration. Slowed my computer way too much..
4. Miranda IM - haven't tried

 

Best Video Converter
SUPER Converter- has virtually all formats you can convert to and from, a bit slow though.
Total Converter

Best Uninstaller
Revo- Completely free, uninstall programs and removes all traces of them by getting rid of old leftover files and folders, registry keys etc. unlike Windows Add and Remove Programs.

Best Screen Recorder
Camstudio - Lots of features including menu makers, video editing etc. can choose the desired capture size anywhere on your screen
Hypercam 2

 

Best Windows Tweaking/Modding tool.
1. TweakUI - from Microsoft. This is a good program to have even if you're not planning to mod. Lots of options and tweaks available
2. RegToy - free. Same general functionality as TweakUI. Options are plenty. There's also some utilities like SS taker, file deleter, startup manager added in.
3. OR, you can just tweak windows yourself, learn from the internet.

 

Best Text Editor (replace Notepad)
1. Notepad++ - highly functional, with lots of features. Can "recognize" programming languages/ scripts. Tab function also.
2. GNU emacs - the infamous "hacker's" editor. Again, many functions. A bit hard to learn/ get used to, though.

 

best free extracting program: 7-zip

best free music converter: dpoweramp converter

most useful music player: windows media player 11 - purely for it's artist finder utility - tags wav files with album art too. other than that it blows

Best music convertor - Audio Convertor Plus - has many formats, and it's fast. Easy to learn, too.

Best video convertor - MyVideoConvertor - great convertor, has most formats, it's fast, easy to learn, and it can extract audio from a video.
