The logic flaw here is that you don't consider the values. You don't have have +98, you have a debt of 98 thus it should be represented by -98. What you do have is a t-shirt with a value of 97, plus your 1. The actual maths here is. -98 + 97 + 1 = 0. The reason I only +1 is that your debt was originally -100 but you repaid 2 to your parents already, thus you no longer posses these singles. If we consider them as part of the money we still have then we'll have to adjust our debt to consider the 2 not repaid. -100 + 97 + 1 + 1 +1 = 0.
