So, I was scrolling through the Demonoid forums, and I read something about swapping discs with a PS3. As this is the method I use to play pirated games on my PS2, I started browsing youtube to see some related videos, and I hit this thing.

Swap out your Hard Drive in your PS3

Have fun doing it. Just take care when it comes to the stock Hard Drive screws, they seem to be very tight. Also, you should choose the disc according to your PS3: the 40 GB one uses a 7200rpm disk, so get one at the same speed or lower. But in the 60-80 GB ones the original disks run at 5400rpm, so try sticking to that value to prevent overheating.

    I hope it helps. :)

Awesome timing, I've just been debating about doing this recently seeing how much space games take up when they install.

    P.S.
    Nice new avatar.

Hmm, very interesting. I barely use any of the space on my 60GB at all, so yeah..

The point of this is having full games on your hard drive disk.

Some dudes out there are developing a tool, named ISO Loader, that will be able to load games from your hard drive. :) The custom hard drive is way too small to be able to have many games at once. Meaning, that once you swap the hard drives, be sure to get a quite big hard drive, like 500 GB. If you're as addicted to the PS3 as I'm addicted to my PS2, you'll probably need to buy one or two more hard drives.

Remember, stick to the speed of the previous hard drive (5400rpm).

    P.S.: Thanks, thebass. :)

    60 GB is gone.

    all because of axxo.

the rpm difference is nice to know.

i probably would've gotten the 7200 rpm and overheat my ps3.

have fun ripping blu ray discs.

500 GB drive will be eaten up by a few games.

But not all of us have that much hdd space. (although i would imagine if someone had a blu-ray drive on their pc they would have a good PC)

If you call 15 a few... For me, 15 would be great, considering you'd save 15x50€=750€=1183.86USD=598.746GBP. With that massive amount of money you save you can pay the electricity/bandwidth to download games and buy a few more HDDs. :p

    15 is not enough!

well... seeing as how there isn't even 15 awesome games yet for the PS3, you might have a point there.

Indeed, it might not be enough, but with the money you save you'll have a lot of money to buy more hard drives and the blu ray drive for your computer. Just saying.

The money you save and the money you have are two different things.
Sure, you theoretically save that much, but that doesn't mean that you actually have that much.

So I save enough by pirating 15 games. Nice. If I didn't use ISO loader to pirate with, then I probably wouldn't have bought 15 games.
    You see what I mean?

Indeed, but with the ISO loader you get the games you want even if you wouldn't buy them, so you do actually save a lot.

Like, you are dying for a few games, say 4 or 5. But another 4 or 5 seem nice, but you don't know how they're like. So, you get the 4 or 5 you're dying for and you "try out" the other 4 or 5 you didn't know about very well. This way you actually save a lot.

Although your option is also very true.

  18. I did it to mine, and I do not regret doing so. I have already surpassed my original HDD's capacity with games and demos. I would recommend doing this, but as jin_kazama said, be careful when taking out some of the screws because they are really tight, and I ended up stripping two of the screws on the HDD and I had to ask sony for a new one.
