Want to buy a Swap Magic thing for my PS2 (slim) but I got a few questions first.

    1. What site can I buy it from? (Australian site)
    2. How much doe's it cost?
    3. Doe's it work with the slim model?
    4. I've heard about some flip-top lid mod thing, do I need that?
    5. Do PSX backups work as well?
    6. Can I use CD's for PSX/2 games?

If you're wanting to play PSX games on a PS2 with some kind of swap disc, then you'll need Code Breaker.

Swap Magic is only for PS2 games. Personuser knows more about the slim one than I.

Hi, I'm Personour, the swap expert. XD

    1.

http://www.au-hackershardware.com/playstation-2/swap-magic-3-8-plus-coder-pal-including-magic-switch-pro-v4-for-slim-line-ps2/prod_10.html (3.8, supports dual-layered and has built-in Action Replay but lower single-layer compatibility)

(There's another, but it's the exact same. These are the only two manufacturer-approved Australian sites. If you want 3.6 (better single-layer compat) then look around more.)

    2.

About 45 bucks for the discs and slim mod.

    3.

Yes, it will. With the bundled magic switch pro v4 (more on that later) orthe flip top, either works (though a top-loader would look a little silly with a flip-top on top of it.)

    4.

You can use either for a slim.

    5.

Not out of the box. You can boot them in many FREE ways, though once you have the swaps. Some ways are PSXlauncher, PS2PSXe (an emulator that's coming along quite well) and the Ulaunch method (the hardest). The Ulaunch and PSXlauncher methods require you own one (1) legitimate (bought) ps1 game. PS2PSXe is an emulator that can run games off USB or a network. No sound yet, and some games are too fast, but the only method which is going to get updates (and yes, there are STILL new emulators coming out for the PS2.)

    6.

Some games require CDs and others require DVDs. PS2 games that are generally less than 710mb should go on a CD (I suggest 8x speed) and Games that are from 711 and up should be put on DVDs (Burn at 4x speed). Brand is important. Universally good brands are sony, taito yuden and verbatim. A good cheap brand here is memorex. Also, DVD images tend to be .ISO files mostly while PS1 images tend to be .Bin and .cues, though you'll probably see a multitude of filetypes, even when you rip your own discs.
PS1 games (if you plan to boot them with psxlauncher) MUST be burnt to CDs.

    Any more questions, just ask.

I was only a few letters off... T_T... XD

I love my swap discs. But I hear that you can't have a game over 4.35GBs or something like that. And since you have a Slim, you can't do a TOC refresh...

    And one missing. XD

Some work, Like Devil May Cry 1-2 if you press X until you reach the title screen. Others, like marvel nemesis, can't load certain parts (the mansion level won't load). Others like sonic heroes will not boot at all since they load from the start. However you can shrink the dummy for sonic heroes (though it's fairly hard and technical) And with 3.8 (DUAL LAYER DVD) he doesn't have to do anything to em.

I just got 3.6 because of the better DVD5 compatibility, gotta play some of those awesome imports.

What did you have? I already had 3.6. :p
Oh! You had the other kind?

    No, I have 3.6.

    I got it a month ago :p

But I know about 3.8 too.

3.6 was about 10 bucks cheaper, but this guy doesn't have any available to him in his area. He has to get 3.8, or get 3.6 off somewhere that's not manufacturer-approved.

I can't find a site that has the 3.6 version, dammit.
What's better/easier, the bundled magic switch pro v4 or the flip top thing? Also, what's the difference?
Looks like I can't play PSX games then, all my PSX games are wrecked so I threw 'em out and I hate playing games without sound :(

Magic switch pro can be harder or easier than the flip-top based on your model number (some require more pieces than others), what do you see as your model number? It's on the bottom of your console.

Yes, I said you CAN play them WITH sound, with PSXlauncher (it saves to a PS1 MemCard). but it's a real pain in the ass if you have a magic switch, as you need to remove it while using said program. It's pretty easy with the flip top, you don't need to take anything out.

Note that you can STILL run it another way if you get the magic switches, if you can install freeMCboot on your ps2, then you can boot psxlauncher from the start and have no problems.

Oh, and the differences? The magic switch doesn't allow the ps2 to signal that the lid is open so it can do AP checks, and the flip top just plain doesn't count as the lid opening at all, since it's not sending signals to the ps2 in any way.

    The model number's SCPH-77002 (PAL)

Okay, you MAY want to go with the flip-top; it seems your model is hard to install switches for. And they are TINY, screw up and the switches might break (if you've no idea what you're doing)

Note, though, that for the flip top to work you have to take off the PS2's lid, and that WILL void your warranty. If you can find a good tutorial it may be a good idea just to go with the magic switch pro.

My PS2 is pretty old so I seriously doubt it still has warranty, actually I don't think it even came with warranty.
So I just buy this flip top and the Magic Swap and I'm set?

Well, yeah, but try and find a bundle with both.

    edit: here. http://www.au-hackershardware.com/playstation-2/swap-magic-3-8-plus-coder-pal-with-flip-top-lid-for-7xxxx-slim-line-ps2/prod_88.html

61 bucks. More expensive. But you don't have to tape down a piece of plastic. Your choice.

No matter what you choose, I can help you boot psx backups AND ps2 backups.

The server is on the U.S. so Make sure they're PAL discs or they won't run on your console. It's hard to tell exactly what they are from the picture, though.

Here's the PAL ones from the biggest seller on the net:

    http://www.mod-chip.com/ps2/swapmagic-v3-6-pal.html

    and the flip-top:

    get these.

Wow, been a while since I posted in this thread, but I finally got the Sawp Magic disks and the lid, they arrived yesterday, it's the 3.8 version though. So, what do I do now?
