Well my laptop has either shut down randomly or overheated FIVE times today :-\
This has really started to worry me because I don't want my drivers to screw up like last time (had to get it fixed because of overheating screwing the drivers or something). So doe's anyone know how to prevent my laptop from randomly shutting down?
By the way, it's an Acer Aspire if that helps.

    Shut down randomly?
Does a message appear before it shut down?
    If yes,
    Then it is a virus.

No, it doesn't show anything except for what I was on before it shuts down. Like it shuts down immediately, as in I'm doing something and then it randomly immediately shuts down.
But I'll probably do a virus scan later anyway.

if it is not under warrenty, then see if you can clean out the vents, they are probably blocked by dust.

an acer aspire one? as in the netbook? or a laptop/notebook?

if its a new one, the problem will be if it runs on battery or if its plugged to the ac cause i heard it heats up faster if it runs on battery, I'm not sure if thats a fact. May i inquire how many hours you are using it?

    It's an Aspire 5720Z & is a notebook.
And it's not new, I've had it since Christmas, 2007. Well on school days I use it from 4-9.30 and on weekends I'm pretty much on it for the whole day, unless I'm not home.

    Not sure about that...

Sorry if this sounds dumb-but are you using just a wall power socket?

Mine did that...until I realised the power cord was sensitive :(

Now I periodically grab it and shove it hard...

But the dust thing may interest me-anyone got answers ?

I think mine is very way off..but
Maybe there's something wrong with your windows system?
    try checking your bios.

You should press F2(if i'm not wrong) the moment the ACER title is seen when you started your laptop.

Okay, I'll try that in a few minutes.

Have you tried bringing it to the support/repair center of acer or any shop? hmmm, also, i had the same problem but it was my ram module, its like a burned ram or something...

how much ram is installed on it? for example, it supposed to have like 1G of ram, 512 non-removable, and 512 removable. check it using dxdiag or just the system properties.

I know it might just be dirty inside but, i would like to help if i can. Maybe we have the same problem.

If your ram is burned, the laptop can be turned on but it can't get into the system.

No I haven't taken it to a repair shop, not lately anyway. Last time I got it fixed I got my RAM upgraded from 1G of RAM to 2.55G. So it's 2.55G.

yeah, but the problem of mine back then is very unique, said my friend. I had 128MB non-removable, and i inserted a 256MB, so technically, it should have around 360MB, right?

I just had 220MB. and it was having bluescreen when reaching the point of input password screen. it rebooted by itself and all was fine except the 220MB rather than the technie around 360mb...

so when you bought it, it has a non-removable of 512MB and has 512MB removable originally right? and then you had it upgraded to 2.5G by removing the removable 512 and inserted a 2G Ram. cause i haven't seen a ram module that is 1.5G by itself.

    I only seen, 32,64,128,256,512,1G, and 2G.

I'm not sure.. All he said (the guy that fixed it) was he could add another G of RAM so I let him.

ok, you said you had it upgraded to around 2.5G of ram, right? Can you right click on My Computer and click properties? it should show system properties. Pls tell us how much/many is your ram, its located down at Computer.

For example of mine is: 1.20Ghz, 624 of RAM.
