I found that just buying the keys to pc games is way cheeper than buying the whole thing. but theirs a problem, unless its a EA game(with EA games all you need is the cd key and you can download the game.) i have no way of getting the game. so could i put a key into steam and download the game from there? or would it have to be a steam game for me to do that?

Only certain keys for certain games on Steam can be used to add games to your Steam list. For example:

Unreal Tournament 3's cd key can be used to add UT3 to your Steam account

Bioshock's cd key cannot be used to add Bioshock to your Steam account

Well, from there you could download an .iso for the game and use your serial key in that. So if for instance I bought a Starcraft CD key instead of the game itself, I could download a CD image of it, mount it/burn it, and use the key in the installation.

Basically, as long as you can get the game in some manner so you can use the key, you're golden.
