Okay, me and my Polish friend have been debating about this topic for 2 years already. He is a follower of the force and I am Trekkie. Which is better, Star Wars or Star Trek.
They're not comparible in anyway... But StarTrek would win.. as long as you dont include anything after "The Next Generation". That includes the recent movie, pure rubbish.
star trek star wars feels like a linear plot, to destroy the evil empire. what's next after that? star trek is more variable.
I like Both... I loved the "typical" Good versus Evil plot of Star Wars & love the idea of the whole force powers, but what I didn't like was how the story was told, because of the decade gap between when the last half & the first half was told, the story lost several coherent connections, as an example. Whatever happened to the Gungans? They were never mentioned in episodes 4 through 6 & in episode one we have this annoying Jarjar Binx to deal with? Also, the continuity of the "technology" present in both halves was destroyed. Can you explain to me, how come computers back when Darth Vader was still young Anakin were better & smaller, whereas when he grew up, the Death Star had massive computers run by dials, knobs & switches? What, the Emperor ordered everyone to use low tech equipment when he employed Darth Vader, I don't think so Plus I didn't really like how they told the story, they should really have started with episode one, than with episode four, in their attempt to tell a uniques story, the story got killed by technical aspects. Star Trek, I never like Generations, Jean-Luc Piccard was such a stiff fuddy-duddy , even before he was borg'ed, he was always by the books, unlike adventurous Captain Kirk. But don't get me wrong, without Star Trek Generations we wouldn't have loonylion here on RomUlation, he is afterall Lt. Cmmdr. Data For me, Voyager with Admiral Janeway & Enterprise with Scott Bakula (sorry I forgot his character's name LOL) were the best. Voyager was awesome because it had THE FIRST Female Captain which was awesome, because it showed the world how a woman might take control of the situation Star Fleet male Captains undergo, but showing us this in women's point of views. I also loved the female Klingon character, she was awesome Enterprise was well, a modern day adaptation of Captain Kirk's crew, I just love how Scott Bakula's character can't control his eager curiosity causing them to get into several predicaments that they did overcome along the way Oh & something to settle the score with... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4ijDlbvAxw
Thats amazing, the video, but i see the both are like togheter, they dont win no one, they have a draw in that video xDDDD
you mean next generation? Picard didn't always go by the book, and he was really quite spontaneous at times, but the impressive thing is how he and his crewmembers were so close that at times they appeared to know what each other were thinking; I remember one episode where Picard was reduced to a 12 year old child by an accident of some kind, and then the Enterprise was taken over by aliens. Thinking Picard was actually a child, they confined him to the ship's schoolroom with the other children. He threw a temper tantrum demanding to see his 'daddy' (Commander Riker) and between them they hatched a plan to get the aliens off the ship, which involved Riker re-routing command functionality to the schoolroom terminal, all the while pretending to be captain and co-operating with the aliens. Another episode where he didn't go by the book was during an attempted mutiny by an admiral on board. An incident several years previously where a ship was testing a special cloaking device that allowed it to pass through solid objects ended in disaster when the warp core overloaded and the cloaking device failed while the ship was inside an asteroid. The admiral had been captain of that ship, and was now trying to retrieve the cloaking device for his own purposes (the Federation was banned from possessing and using cloaking devices, so the test had been top secret) At some point during the mission, Picard found out the Admiral's true intentions, and arrested him. The admiral responded by stripping Picard of his captaincy and attempting to commandeer the Enterprise, but was foiled when the crew refused to obey anyone except Picard. At this point, Riker admitted that he had been present on the ship during the test, and he had not objected to what his captain was doing. Picard told him, 'In that case I have to arrest you too.", and Riker replied 'I accept that.' The admiral and Riker were taken to the brig. Meanwhile, the Romulans had attacked and trapped the Enterprise within the same asteroid by blocking off their exit. Geordie salvaged the cloaking device and retrofitted it to the Enterprise, allowing them to escape the asteroid, at which point Picard hailed the Romulans and explained the situation. They were most surprised and impressed with his honesty. Picard subsequently released Riker. Kathryn Janeway was in fact a Captain, not an Admiral (although in the second and third to last episodes there was an Admiral Janeway, which was the captain's future self, she had broken a few rules to help her past self get Voyager home sooner). Though she ran a tight ship with regards to rank and due respect, she was often regarded as a mother figure by the crew, especially the Doctor. Episodes that come to mind are one where Voyager was badly damaged, and she orders an evacuation of the crew (I think it was Year of Hell parts 1 and 2), As the crew assembles ready to evacuate, she gives them a speech telling them to make her proud, and she said that when she finds them again, stressing that she will, whatever it takes, she wants to hear all about their adventures. There was another where the Doctor had sexual fantasies about Janeway, and by some accident they were revealed to the crew. As a result he shut himself in sick bay for a week and wouldn't talk to anyone out of embarrassment. Janeway became concerned and went into sickbay to talk to him. She managed to persuade him that such fantasies were a core part of being human, and the crew did not think any less of him for having them (the Doctor was actually a hologram, but by her orders he was treated as a human crewmember, and he developed a conscience, parts of his program were also deleted to enable him to act on his own initiative). After that he overcame his embarrassment and resumed normal interactions with the crew. Bel'ana Torres eventually married Tom Paris, and he once famously stated 'the only Klingon I'm afraid of is my wife after she's worked a double shift'
Star Wars. I guess I'm too young for Star Trek: all my life I've been more accustomed to Star Wars. That being said the first three movies, starting with Phantom Menace, have been going downhill. And let's not talk about the Clone Wars animation... Oh, forgive me for intruding, but how come a certain mod locked a thread made by a user titled "Harry Potter vs Star Wars"? Not debatable because they are not the same genre, now? I think it's fair game. Harry Potter is a series. Star Wars is a series. Both are highly successful ones at that. Both have been made into movies. I don't see how that thread can be locked, when this one hasn't. Sounds to me like someone is being picky -.-
Maybe that's why you aren't a Trek fan......how do you know you won't like something if you haven't tried it? Anyway, I like both. But I prefer Trek. Trek (usually) uses intelligence and wit to solve problems, Wars says let's go slice things up with my light saber, which is effective too.
i don't think they are comparable either but if i had to chose star trek wins overall as it is a series which means more story better characters etc. my favorite star trek is voyager followed by next generation (voyager has the best episodes and love the crew of the enterprise) but i don't like the kirk days as he is a wanker and i'm not in to old badly made things, i don't care how retro or revolutionary something is if it's just cheesy crap
@BloodVayne: Harry Potter falls under the Fantasy & Magic genre with a bit of Mystery & detective solving while Star Wars is Space Sci-fi with bits of old western cowboy & Bushido inspired ideas. So how can you compare &/or contrast two things that have nothing in common? It's like comparing Final Fantasy & Megaman Battle Networks in the videogame world.
What the... did you even read my post? All I'm saying is that it's a bit unfair that the OP of that thread got it closed, since it was a VALID debate. (i.e. which is the better series? why?). They're both movies. They're both highly successful franchises. They both appeal to the younger generation, and the same demographic. I could go on... They may not be the same exact genre (even though BOTH are fantasy films, Star Wars is science fiction; while Harry Potter is magic/ mythical fiction), but they have more things in common than not. Anyways, using this logic, we should lock all threads made like this (a vs b, where both are just a question of personal preference): this one could be locked as well, as Star Wars and Star Trek pander to different generations, with entirely different plotlines, and that one (Star Wars) is more successful than the other. Anyways, as I said, Star Trek isn't familiar with quite a lot of youngsters, thus they are more attracted to Star Wars. The new Star Trek movie seems to revitalize the series for this generation, but it received mixed reviews (generally bad) from the older Trekkies. So, there is definitely a disconnect there. Meanwhile, Star Wars is on a slow but sure decline if Lucas doesn't shape up and MAKE A GOOD MOVIE now and then...
I hate when people go out of topic, why they have to talk about harry potter when we are talking about star wars and start trek....?
