Pretty late to the show but I'm finally playing Star Ocean 2. Played the first one, wasn't in love with it but heard some great things about the 2nd so I gave it a ago. The start of the game was impressive, it was filled with the right mood, good pacing and lots of nice dialogue, the last of which I was particularly impressed with since lots of JRPGs tend to skimp in this department. Unfortunately, things only seemed to go down hill from there. After the first few towns all the aforementioned good stuff died off, to be replaced by typical RPG routine - acquire treasure from generic dungeon A, then dungeon B, dungeon C, etc, stingily punctuated with brief character interactions. Now I'm near the end with the '4 fields' of Nedes quest, which makes me second guess even finishing the game because it is the epitome of RPG genericness. Anyway, I'm just so disappointed that I had to write about it. Am I one of the few who feel this way? Or is this a commonly shared view?
Did you know that the game has multiple different endings depending on who you spend more time with on solo mode? That alone should interest you in the very least. When I played this game as Ashton, I had the misfortune of getting the ending where he was with the guy with the two Dragons on his back LOL! Although I do hated the game's grindfest atmosphere as this was THE FIRST RPG I played that had character level exceeding level 99 My team were at level 200 but the final boss still kicks our asses hard!
wouldn't call it different endings though. Its just a quick scene and a small dialog. Besides, i also didn't enjoyed it much.
I finished the game sitting at like L70-ish for each character. You only need to top L200 if you're planning on fighting the extra bosses or Indalecio with his limiter off. Also, you're looking too hard at it. Yeah, it does have a few slightly generic RPG elements, but so does FF13 and people are still jizzing themselves over that shitpile. You've got the option of doing PAs with characters, and there's still plenty of development if you take the optional quests and characters. You've actually got to sit back and suspend the "oh man another generic RPG" vibe to actually enjoy this game, because it's actually better than something like Final Fantasy 7. Also ALL OF MY RAGE YOU UNCULTURED FUCK
You're nearly done anyway if you're at the four Fields on Nede iirc. I'd give it another four-ish hours after that if you're good at it and don't grind much. The endgame starts coming together at about that point.
