    Hello :)

    I have a question.
I do not wanna wait ages for my computer to startup, so I decide to try stand-by once.

    But...
    - Does the computer sorta "turn off" when in stand-by?
    - Is "Sleep mode" the same? (In Dutch it stands as "Slaapstand")
    - Will my programs remain ''running'' when in stand-by?
    - Must I press the on button to get back in Windows?

    I use Windows XP.

Please answer all questions, I'm worried about what will happen...

I'm pretty sure that Stand-By just cuts power to non-essential stuff and keeps power on the RAM to keep the memory in it alive.
Hibernate stores system memory to the hard drive and powers down the computer.

While in stand by, if you lose power completely (battery dies, or your computer is powered down) you will lose all the data in your current session.
Hibernate won't, since it already powers down.

I believe Windows will switch to Hibernate if the system is in Stand By and detects the battery is about to die. Or it might be time based.

sleep mode and standby are the same thing, it is also known as suspend to ram. Basically what happens is the computer mostly shuts off, but the ram remains powered, so everything is exactly as you left it when you resume. As the ram remains powered, if you have a power outage everything is lost, and the computer will behave as if it was shut down.

suspend to disk, or 'hibernate' is a variant on this, where the contents of the ram is saved to a file on the hard disk, and the computer shuts off completely. This conserves battery life further in the case of laptops, or in the case of desktops is unaffected by power outages. On the flip side, it takes longer to save and resume the state than suspend to ram does.

some computers can be configured to resume from standby by pressing something on the keyboard, it depends on the bios.

And how do I activate hibernate?
It's just that I can turn the computer off without loading everything at the next startup...

    Thanks anyway.

Do you have a laptop or a desktop? I thought Laptops had Hibernate button visible from the shutdown menu by default. If not, when you enter the Shutdown menu and see the "Standby" "Turn Off" and "Restart" options, hold down the Shift key and the Standby option will change to Hibernate. That way also works for Desktops.

hibernation does need to be turned on in power options. It's also important to be aware that while hibernate almost always works with laptops, not all desktops like it.

Yes I use an desktop. Thanks, but does that function work at Windows XP Service Pack 2?
(I may not update from my dad)
Sorry for my noobish questions, but this is the first time I'm doing this...
