It's official, the PS3 Slim will be 299 € and the "phat" PS3 price will drop to 299€ will Sony punch back to nintendo and microsoft?

A blow to Microsoft. That's about it. Only time will tell.

Also the PS3 Slim is ugly as hell and it's a square shape.

Personally I don't care about shape but what I am annoyed about right now is Microfail rising their Xbox 360 arcade price to £160. I wanted a PS3 more anyways. It's now £250 in the UK which is an improvement, so I might actually look at getting it now :D

Any word for the US market price cuts? I'm working on getting one, but I would like to know IF the US will get a price cut and when I will be pissed if I go out and buy one and say like 2-3 weeks later it drops in price.

The price drop is everywhere. It's dropping 100$ off it's price tag.

I finally found the info I wanted which was a date. It happens here the 1 week in September down to 299.00 which I assume is the current 80gig model and the slimlime (that looks awful) comes out around the same time.

some stores might already be selling it for $299

Amazon has already dropped their price, Wal-mart and K-Mart hasn't dropped yet in my area as of yet, haven't checked the specialty stores like Gamestop, course I only have 25% of the money so by the time I accumulate it all they should be in all the stores.

One thing that pissed me off was the model that was cut was claimed not to be backwards compatible to PS2 but the 80gig that is packed in with Metal Gear Solid 4 can be done via emulation, but they haven't been cut in price. Found out that the ugly ass slimline may have a packed in game but no signs on what it would be or the selection and the first model has a 120gb HD but there is another one later that claims it will have a 250gb at a higher price I am certain.

you can change the hard disk yourself without voiding the warranty.

i thought the price will never go down.

ive read somewhere that if sony cut the ps3 price, they are selling each ps3 with loss

Sony used to lose like 300 dollars for each PS3. Then 100, then 40. If they can afford to cut the price by another 100 dollars, then maybe, just maybe, Sony is actually making money on their PS3's! ;D

Maybe, but Sony isn't only a game company, their company is huge and rack in a large amount of money.

They make consoles cheaper by making new more affordable parts in the console. Sony probably found or made the new cheaper parts. That's usually how companies lower their price along with supply/demand.

This is probably how Sony is going to gain a profit with these new Slim consoles. Isn't there something around to show that MS is finally making a profit on Xboxes, like a year ago?

Get a phat PS3, when the slim comes out all of PS3's are going down in price. 80GB is a large amount that won't fill up easily. Also you can easily replace the HDD if you want more, it's pretty cheap too.

...If it had ps2 emulation I would have gotten it.

Nope-btw the slim has 120GB hard drive out of the box-at least in australia

Yes you can change the PS3 Slims' HD without voiding the warranty, Gamespot did an unboxing already, it was a really easy to access HD bay. Can put anything you want in there.

Obviously we won't know about reports on power failures or stuff til it comes out, but it's probably pretty safe, it can't really be worse than the 360. The PS2 slim was much tinier than this and mine is still running perfectly.
