The game is a mascot kart racing game, very similar to other games in its genre like Mario Kart, Konami Krazy Racers and Crash Team Racing. Characters race through various race circuits themed on different Sega franchises and collect power-ups to boost their speed or hamper their opponents. Additional boost can be earned by successfully executing drifts (with longer drifts earning more boost), or performing tricks while in midair. Like Sumo's previous Sega game, Sega Superstars Tennis, each character has a special ability (called an "All-Star Move") unique to them that they may use to their advantage (such as Sonic transforming into Super Sonic and AiAi riding in marbles), which they can obtain if they are running behind in the race. How long each All-Star move lasts depends on the character's current position. :p

Vehicles are separated into four different categories: racing, off-road, bike and hovercraft. As the terrain on the tracks will vary, vehicles can be either assisted or hindered by the surfaces they drive upon. For example, racing-type vehicles perform best on hard surfaces such as wood or concrete, but are hampered by soft terrain such as mud, sand or snow. The opposite is true for off-road type vehicles. Hovercrafts are not affected by any terrain and are able to perform multiple boosts after a jump, but they are unable to drift and have low acceleration. All of the vehicles also have their own specific engine sounds. 8)

By playing through the game, players can earn Sega Miles that can be spent in the in-game shop to unlock additional content such as characters, tracks, art and songs. The game features a total of 24 tracks based on locations from Sonic Heroes, Super Monkey Ball, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Jet Set Radio Future, Samba de Amigo, and The House of the Dead.[7]

The game will have customizable multiplayer options for up to four players on split-screen and eight players online, including Free Race, Arena, Knockout and Capture the Chao modes.[8] There will also be Grand Prix, Time Trials and Mission modes for single player.[9][10][11]

The soundtrack for the game will consist of various old and new tracks from the various Sonic and Sega franchises, though it will also feature original songs by various artists including Richard Jacques. Each course will start with one track, with more being unlocked as players earn Sega Miles. The Nintendo DS version of the game will feature MIDI versions of the tracks composed by Allister Brimble and Anthony Putson of Orchestral Media Developments.[6] The main theme song of the game will be So Much More... by singer Bentley Jones.[12]pretty cool huh ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :)

I refuse to get the Wii version as controls on ANY Wii racing game are horrible (unless it uses digital/analog STICK control).
I'm surprised Sega will release the game as a PC port; retail and Steam... check those torrents frequently, lmao.
I'm also waiting for the DS port on here. I've played the demo and like it. I haven't played a good DS racing game since Mario Kart, lol.
However, Crash Team Racing owns all. Adventure Mode was a bit silly, but unlocking via Trophies, Keys, Bosses, etc. make a go-kart racer a good one. Time Attack on that was original... like I said, CTR owns. But seeing a game like Sonic & Sega All-Stars... Tennis was great (until I get about unlocking Alex Kidd and the rest of the Jet Set Radio ball games...), integrating characters from many Sega games... why can't Mario Kart be like this?!? It's usually always the same eight characters... and then I pick Toad.

Nintendo can do this because they have a lot more characters in the Mario series as it is. Sonic doesn't have many, even counting the ones that no one cares about (about half the roster in Sonic Heroes).

Some games aren't so bad...but kids (ie 9-14) play better with wii remote steering than retro junkies ie ME that are used to the stick.

It would have alternitives like mario kart did, but let's wait until it actually comes out before we start bashing it :p

    Plus

    Equals=FAIL

Exactly, smash brothers can kx it up because it's about the nintendo characters, mario kart is mario universe...

That said...maybe a "nintendo kart" or "smash brother's racing" could happen...WHEN I'M DEAD!

No, not really. Characters/enemies from the first sonic games haven't been exactly prevalent in the later ones (ROBOT CRABS, ROBO FISHES etc etc), there's tons of characters that aren't popular (all the characters from Chaotix with the exception of Knuckles and the characters from that Sonic Arcade game). Along with terrible Sonic games (Sonic 2006, Shadow, Unleashed up to a certain point, the ones for the Wii).

I doubt a lot of people care that they can't play as Bark the Polar Bear, or Fang.

I'm of course only talking about the game universe.

Mario has a lot more characters in it's own universe, and enemies that a recurring and we actually care about. Goombas, Koopas, Bowser, Wario, Waluigi (sorta), Luigi, Birdo, Toad, Peach, Daisy, Mario, Dry Bones, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong JR, etc. Thus enabling them to have more of just the Mario universe.

Granted, Sonic fans have Sonic Riders and the ones on the PSP.

It's no Mario Kart but the DS and console versions both have a lot going for them and the single player is hands down more enjoyable than playing MK solo. However, I have a couple of real issues, especially with the multiplayer that I'm amazed no-one else has mentioned yet in reviews or forums (from what I've seen anyway).

Firstly, the DS version.. Me and my housemate fired up the multi-card multiplayer and were amazed to find that there is no option to add CPU players. Unless we are just being incredibly stupid and can't find the option, this basically makes the multiplayer almost redundant, especially in the knockout mode if there are only 2 of you playing. Granted, with 4 players it would be passable but even if the CPU karts are just cannon fodder, they are essential to the multiplayer modes because playing heads-up is incredibly boring in both MK and this. Ever since the SNES version of MK there have been CPU characters to make up the numbers and it is inexcusable that this game has left the option out. For some people it might not be a problem but for us it basically means that we won't be playing the multiplayer unless there are 4 of us and even then we'd probably just choose to play MK instead.

Secondly, why is there no option to set up cups as in MK? Why is there no random course selection? They have the fundamentals of the game pretty much nailed and as close to MK as possible without it being a total rip off but it boggles the mind why they would have left these features out of the game. There simply aren't enough options for customisation of multiplayer matches or play sessions. At the very least there should be the same amount of options as MK, if not more considering this is a much more recent game. It's such a wasted opportunity considering that kart games are pretty much all about multiplayer. It's admirable the amount of effort that has gone into other aspects of the game which I really like, but otherwise it's very disappointing.

The Wii version suffers from a similar lack of features that again boggles the mind. As in the DS version, why is there no option to set up a cup? More options are again needed. I don't want to have to keep going back to the main menu to set up each and every single race. Secondly, unless I'm mistaken the game only keeps track of how the human opponents are performing i.e. if I come 6th in a race and my mate comes 7th, then I would score more points than him but the game doesn't take into account or keep track of where all the other CPU racers came in the race or subsequent races..

Thirdly, unless I just can't find where it is, why are there no statistics for the different racers in the Wii version? They have it in the DS version so why not on the console versions? I'm sure that the different characters do have different attributes but you can't check them anywhere. Again, I really like how the game plays and the single player is great but this lack of functions really hampers the multiplayer aspect of it which should easily be the most important thing.

tl;dr, great game but not enough customisation in multiplayer
