Something weird happened last night (local time)

Last night at around 1AM to 2AM (local time, so subtract 6 hours so, it was around 7PM to 8PM Forum time) I couldn't access RomUlation so I figured it was just a maintenance downtime. Then when RomUlation was again online I noticed that the small controller thing icon beside the url address was different, instead of the usual controller thing icon, there was this pink circular icon thing, so I thought maybe it was changed, but when I logged on now the controller thing icon was back. So what do you think happened?

I think you were half-asleep, either that or it's probably a trick by Loony or Seph. Or maybe it didn't happen at all and it was a dream. Or aliens brain-washed you to think you saw it. Or it was just a bug. OR... It was a hacker.

Nah. You are talking about the favicon of the site, the image which is displayed by the web address's URL. It might have just been your imagination, or it just switched images somehow. Although the favicon image is usually named favicon.ico...

So those are called favicon. And no I wasn't half asleep, anyway I tried to look for one that looked like it on google to no avail. Anyway using paint I made a crappy drawing of it & what I saw there last night looked like this:

The colors are off but that's how it kinda looked like, but smaller of course.

Looks similar to the cPanel logo.. Could be wrong though. Just wait until a admin comes along and posts.

Well I do hope it wasn't a hack attack though, but if it was, they wouldn't find anything worth stealing from my PC :p

was probably your firefox messing up and sending a bad header, which caused our server to display the cpanel installed page instead of the site. You aren't the first to have it happen.

why were you paying that much attention to the favicon?

That sounds like some extreme boredom :p

OK so it happened again tonight (local time). I opened up my PC & logged on to RomUlation at 2:20AM, but to no avail, it seemed there was another maintenance downtime.

Now before I continue, may I ask if there was one indeed from 2:20AM to 3:3oAM (local time)?

If not please read past this & read the stuff about "My Thoughts", if there was one please do read on.

So anyway, whenever RomUlation is down, I get redirected to this page:
    Notice the local time.

On the url address box, you see that freaky favicon header thing. So is this normal? Anyway, I only experience this with RomUlation, every where else I go to works fine.

    "My Thoughts"

I was thinking, could this be an example of the things that could go wrong with that DNS Flaw that was found a month ago? But if that was it, didn't it only affect you if you use search engines like google to find stuff on the Net? And when the search engine shows you the search results, you could be affected by the Flaw by showing you sites that may seem legit but aren't. Also, if that were so, how could it affect me? RomUlation is on my bookmarks menu, so obviously it's kind of a direct route so to speak. I can't get the patch fix for this flaw because loony said it's not advisable to do so if you use zonealarm as your personal firewall.

I really do hope this is nothing as loony said above though. (local time 4:26AM)

    P.S.

Shoot! as I was typing this it happened again, I was cut off from the forum.

It's not because of boredom, mind you :p (local time 5:47AM)

this is odd, and potentially could be the DNS flaw, but I doubt it. It certainly isn't anything to do with us.

EDIT: I have spoken with patton about this and he says it is something called DNS Masking that your ISP are doing. this is when they redirect the DNS on their system, either deliberately or because they're having a DNS problem. the solution is to add romulation.net to your hosts file.

So how do I go about adding RomUlation.net on my ISP Host's file? Do I report this to them or do I manually do it?

no, it's the hosts file on your computer. You need to browse to 'C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc' and there will be a file named 'hosts' with no extension. open this file in notepad, and at the end (on a new line) put 'www.romulation.net' (without quotes) followed by a tab character, then '64.86.135.72' (again without quotes). Save the file and close notepad.

I need to warn you that doing this bypasses DNS completely when you access RomUlation, so if the site moves you will have to delete the line or you will no longer be able to access the site.

    OK, I understand.

I've added that line on the host file for now, but I'll test my connection again tonight without it, if this problem persist I'll just have to be on my toes if ever RomUlation moves again.

    Thanks loony.

Hey I was right. Having my own cPanel and webhost paid off.

no you weren't. Although that has happened to people before, its not what is happening this time.

As I said on my last post, I'll check things out without the added line on the host file loony said I should edit.

I noticed that this happens only on the hours between 1AM to 2PM & sometimes re occurs just before 6AM, then it never occurs again until the next day at around 1AM to 2AM again. I logged on at around 10PM Thursday Last night (it's already Friday now 4.56AM) & it occurred again, so I'm guessing my ISP's having DNS problems at those times. I wonder how I should report this to them.

Costumer care: Hello Smartbro how may I help you?
Cahos: Hello, I noticed that at around 1AM to 2 AM, I get cut off from a site I frequently visit, can you do something about it?

Would that be how I should report it to them? Clearly this isn't a connection related problem (i.e. the internet connection isn't responding) as I can connect to the web, just not RomUlation at specified time.

I can just wait it out though.

also my mistake with the hosts file, I posted from memory, and its actually the other way around, i.e '64.86.135.72' [tab] 'www.romulation.net'

Please notice though that if you add it to the host file and we ever change IP then you will have to either update your host file or remove the entry otherwise romulation.net will permanently point to a bad IP.

Yeah I noticed that on the host file my local host was written the same way, the ID number first then the local name, so I typed RomUlation's info the same way too.

Again, though I sound like an annoying tape recorder, thanks loony, you & this community has helped me & a lot others in sticky situations & I very much appreciate it :D

@Boss seph: Thanks for that bit seph, loony warned me about this on an earlier post & I shall be on my toes if such a scenario does occur. God I really love this community.
