Some Questions About Xbox 360

I just bought an Xbox 360 and I have a few questions although sounds silly, (as I am new to this) can anyone tell me if:

    1. Does the Xbox 360 supports external hard disc other than its original Microsoft hard disc? I mean can it read just about any hard disc you can find on the market and then enables me to transfer any game titles(from discs) into it and play without using any discs at all? ( As referred to other storage device on the xbox)

    2. Should I place my Xbox 360 standing or lying flat on the surface? Horizontal or vertical? Does it affect the reading of the disc? Which method is better in maintaining my console?

    Thanks!! ;)

It's better to keep your Xbox lying flat. This gives the already constricted air flow a better pathway. Keep the sides and top clear of anything, don't crowd it with other items.

Microsoft doesn't like you not buying their Hard drives, so they make the Xbox only use theirs. (I love my 360, but it's true, it's not as easy/cheap to upgrade as the PS3, which can use a normal HDD).

    hi,

you can 'install' games to the hard drive, the option is in a bit of an odd place so you will have to hunt about. You still need the disc but does speed up load times.

Yeas, I have came upon this selection but then again if it required a disc to play, not much difference is made there eh? I still need to get the Microsoft Hard Drive though to be able to do that much:) But thanks for the tips. By the way does the memory stick (the slots looks so much like ps2) able to store my saved games so I could just play them at a friend's place or something??

Faster loading times and your DVD drive is not spinning so it's quieter. No drive spinning = less heat as well.

Yes, when you save the game initially, you select your storage device, just choose the memory card. You can also choose to change the storage device when you are saving previously saved games, usually the "X" (Blue) Button.

Some games, like Fable 2, have some weird limits on what you can do with Saved characters/games. I don't know the details, but it's designed to try and stop you from copying your Fable 2 characters and duplicating items (I assume). I think it's all spelled out in the game manual.

Get yourself a cheap laptop cooler pad to go under it, 360's are known for overheating and dying.
Mine uses a usb plug, which works perfectly off the 2nd controller port.

How true, however there is a way around it using an external drive thru an empty controller port.

Wow, really? Nobody seems to know much about Xbox 360 here in where I live. I can't get any answers about the Xbox correctly. I am truly interested in getting a hard drive other than endorsed by Microsoft because I can't find one here in my small town. I would really want my xbox 360 to last longer, so that cooler thing sounds good and the hard disc too. But can you tell me how do I go about installing the hard disc on a separate controller slot? I am only using one joystick, please tell me where I can add the hard disc..much appreciated guys!:)

You need a jtag'd xbox 360 for it, do a google search for it for info, as I'm sure this place has rules about posting such links.

With this you can run all your games from an external drive, it'll even run Live Arcade titles, btw, there are a ton of these up on Usenet now.

There's only 1 major draw-back, you can never use the Xbox Live feature, it's an instant ban, if this is important to you, then forget about ever trying to hack your 360 and stick to buying legit games for it, every hack is detectable by MS, it's just a matter of time before they pop you on it.

Oh, yeah mine is a modded Xbox 360, nobody and no one plays original titles around where I live..I mean you can even find an original game in stores. Okay I will try to look into this jtag'd thing, I don't mind not being able to go online since my connection is horrible. Just offline is good enough. Thanks!

A friend of mine in NY just got his done for like $60.00, he's using a standard 500 gig drive for now, he also said that after prepin' the game, it actually shrinks it in size by alot.

About the cooling, I do recommend some fans because my xbox was overheating, ut be careful where you put the fans! My dad put a fan blowing into exhaust holes on the xbox, which caused CONSTANT overheating

LOL, no kidding, yeah that's what I was thinking, if you wanna put a fan or something, it has to be the opposite otherwise it might do more harm than help. I am using the new chipset Jasper so I really hope it will not overheat like the old ones. Microsoft should really fix this problem once and for all, it's getting a really horrible reputation all over the world. But I still love Xbox considering the problem. Maybe I should have waited for the Valhalla chipset but I couldn't wait any longer.

With regards of the external hard disc, I don't think I can get my hands on an original Microsoft one. One more question regarding the xbox 360...it doesn't read old xbox games does it? And do you really need a battery charger attached on the controller? I mean is it more worth while in the long run than normal batteries? How long does normal batteries last usually?? Thanks in advance!:)

The jasper is supposed to be the best for this mod, check your production date, my buddy in NY used one with this chipset.

Overheating has plagued most next-gen systems, PS2, Xbox and Gamecube, so the 360 isn't an exception, this was one reason the power inverter was moved out of the box.

The 360 cannot read the original xbox titles, modded or not :(
Battery life depends on brand and how much it's used, myself i just leave mine attached to the console, the infrared sometimes interferes with my Wii and other wireless stuff.

What are you talking about? The xbox 360 plays original xbox titles. If your xbox 360 didn't come with it, you just have to download a small update from Xbox Live, or go to www.xbox.com and download the update and burn it to a CD to install onto your Xbox 360.

i got told you can use a different hard drive with the 360.
this may be wrong cos i cant remember but i think you have to format the hard drive to fat32 and in 40gb partitions.
may have been bullshit, i dont know.

For an unmodded system this will work, not for a modded one, there is a way around this for modded systems, but it's not worth the effort. The game has to be burned to a dual-layer disc after being patched and padded, dual-layers still cost too much for most people to do this and it requires a certain firmware hack to work at all.
